Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

PG is a popular combo with a Custom

awsome thanx chewy lol.. thats what i had in mind because id like to give my guitar a brighter tone for the neck but ive never used one.. i know the PG will work well when im playing some classic roc and hard rock.... does it sound good for metal aswell?

With the right amp, no reason you can't play metal with it.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

So if it's always an ice pick, that's why it sounds excellent in my guitar? That's why a lot of the Duncan-loaded guitars come with it, and why they have high customer ratings? That's why Jeff Beck uses it? I mean, no offense, but you're opening up a HUGE can of worms. In fact, tonight I was ripping a sample of some playing around with my ESP (Hot Rodded combo, i.e. JB bridge) and I didn't get ice pick. Ever heard of Megadeth? Dave Mustain used the JB for virtually all their past albums, and only recently went active (but the actives he picked were "voiced like the Jazz and JB" according to the SD news clip).

It could be your amp EQ.

i'm with you man, it is not ice picky in my maple top guitar. and i'm using it through a fender fm lots of highs and mids IMO

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I love & use both, but in my favorite sounding Les Paul has a distortion in it & as a matter of fact, 2of 3 LP's have a distortion in it. My Epi LP has a JB.

cheers Primo.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I guess it depends on what metal you play. I play extreme death metal and use a JB in my Hamer VKK.

Wait though...wood of the guitar makes a difference! All maghogany gives you a warm rich sound and you don't want to go too much on the pickup. At least that is my experience.

In 1986, I bought my Hamer VKK with a stock Seymour Duncan JB. It was and is the best sounding metal guitar I have ever played. I thought I could get better and meaner by buying a Invader to replace it. The Invader is so mean and fast it lifted the dust in the room but back then I was into speed metal. It had zero warmth.

I went back to the JB because I wanted some tone.

Now in my Gibson Explorer I have SH6's in both positions and she is really mean! I lose something but rhythms come out very easy! Metallica is very easy to get.

So again, what kind of metal do you want to play?

The JB is one of best pickups SD makes so you won't go wrong with the it and if you want more send it back to SD for replacement to the SH6.

junkdk

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I think the JB is great....way back when seymour had only two high output pickups the JB and the Custom and you could get them in double cream(friggin dimarzio) the distortion is more modern metal...its heavy on the mids and is more agressive than the jb...all around more CRUNCH! I prefer the jb's though because i like a little cleaner lead tones...Im actually really diggin my Alnico 2 pros right now for everything though hehe and am switching a jb set out for a 78 set

Yea those alnico 2 pros are awsome.. such a nice smooth tone which is awsome... thinking of putting in a set in my old LP when i get my new one :smokin:

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Slight change-up in topic: my Dean Z-X is a basswood body, bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fretboard guitar (Explorer shape). I have an SH-6 in the bridge & love it, & now I'm thinking about a neck pup. Recommendations? SH-6 neck? Something else? I pretty much stick to overdriven lead & clean rhythm tones with a neck pup, I keep the high gain rhythm stuff on the bridge.

The only pickup I can comment on for Basswood body would be the '59 neck. I was impressed as to how it sounded in a Showmaster, and I purchased a Showmaster as a result. As for the Jazz, it probably would also do well, but I've got no experience with that pickup in a basswood guitar (but I love how it sounds on my agathis body guitar).

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

To me, it's a draw. I hear the Distortion is beefy but can't clean up very well at all, versus I've owned the JB and I love it (it can get decent clean sounds). It's really up to you, but me, I'd use the JB.

i've had the custom for about...oh, 2-3 months now?? anyways, i feel like im out of the honeymoon phase with this pup...and twin reverb, not trying to start **** with you or anything, diff strokes man, but i got my BRIDGE SH-6 to sound pretty much EXACT to the tone of lets say, Bother by Stone Sour....its SOOO sensitive to attack. i was and still am shocked. it pushes my clean channel into a 60's snarl, my mild lowgain into vintage marshall, and my modern into a...a blistering, defined, ripping, mother ****er!! its big, its full (which was one of my big fears) and like someone said before, dont crank the bass up on your amp, that'll muddy up almost anything...an a two guitar band, this thing should deffinately belong in the lead players hands...it just rips. kinda one of those things that makes you play over your head a little. its fun to play. period. it works surprisingly well in parralell with your neck pup too.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

alnico 2 pros are like bread and butter with an lp....its probably the most usable pickup because it really takes the sound of the amp you are using rather than the other way around. it has enough mids to get chunky with a boost pedal and distortion....its really a tone tweakers dream.

oh, and something else to consider, a lot of people told me when i was trying to decide on a pup that the JB and Distortion, are virtually the same pickup with different mags...i know that can mean a lot, but bascially you got your distoriton (sh-6) and "distortion light" (JB) as it was put so many different times...

ps - i've got some live clips of my band doing an original at some bar...anyways, its my sh-6 in my esp viper through my mesa single recto...search myspace for a new definition, we're the only band that comes up....at least, last time i checked we were...i think its like www.myspace.com/anewdefinitionband.com or something...the song is called forgotten prophecy. oh, and its recorded through a simple digital camera taking video. but you might get an idea...and pss- sorry for the lack of movement. there was about 30 people there at that time in the night and it was a 4 hour gig....hope it helps.

Go for the DD. The Custom seems to be really popular in here, but i've tried it and as a metal player, i feel that the Custom seems to be lacking a little bit on the "crunch" department and a bit overwhelming on the bass compared to the DD.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Distortion all the way, bro. The SH-4 is good too,but IMO it's a little to boomy for rhythm. The SH-6 has a great crispy, crunchy growl, does leads well also..Don't forget about the SH-6N.It's a great neck pup.
