I

I play out of a Peavey 6505+ half stack. i guess im lookin for something that can be used for leads but something that u can get a good chug going with as well. im open 2 any other suggestions to.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I'd look at either a SH-6 distortion or an Sh-5 Custom.

The Custom is a metal machine and isn't as compressed as a distortion, go Custom you won't be sorry!!!

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

Which one does what? I would like to know too.

Without writing a long winded explanation, The JB is more suited for lead playing and the distortion is a better all around pickup. The JB also seems to be alot more picky about the guitars it's in, I only use it in alder or ash strat-like guitars.

That tremonti SE is mahogany, I think either a Distortion or a Custom is going to kill in that guitar!!!

awsome.. thanx guys.. i noticed that the distortion has a higher output than the custom, i was just wondering if that would make the distortion muddy?

not necessarily, with the right settings a distortion is pretty tight !!!

I have a Kramer Focus 1000 with an SH-6 in it and it's a metal machine. I'm swapping it out for a custom soon though

will the alnico magnets in the custom custom give it a smoother distortion?

Yes but I think you'd be better suited with the Custom!!!

General guideline
Custom = Metal
Custom5 = Hard Rock (the C5 sounds thin to me)
Custom Custom = Classic Rock

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

I've tried both the JB and distortion in my mahogany guitar. I found that the distortion did some things very well, and some things not so well, where as the JB did everything well. It all boils down to your style.

The distortion is more aggressive with larger harmonics, but you lose some of that sweet tone for leads and riffs you get from JB. I'd say its best if you're doing alot of chord ring outs, rhythm and breakdowns. It has more lower mids than JB, but its also more compressed due to the ceramic magnet. I also found that the Distortion isn't as clear as the JB in certain situations. For example, parts that combine rhythm and lead in the same riff. I ended going back to JB, it had the defination and tone I was looking for, while retaining the low end chug, crunch and aggressiveness I need. I only wish it had a bit more low mids. But I hear putting in an Alnico 8 in it does the trick.

I haven't tried custom but I am curious. I've disliked every ceramic pickup I've tried but people say the Custom is akin to a PAF tone, so who knows? Hope I helped you out bro.

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

people that use JB include myself, alice in chains, megadeth, tool

we love the JB.

noough said!

Re: SH-4 jb vs. SH-6 Distortion....

When in doubt, try the JB first......

If it sounds too nasal and /or thin, get a distortion, if that sounds to aggressive or brite, get a custom....

That real world return policy is great for getting the right pup.

P.S. - I am currently in the honeymoon phase with the C5....some may say it sounds thin, and it may sound thin, but I love its brightness and volume. It makes for real "splashy" hamonic content. It still has plenty of low end for my application (most of my amps are low end and low mid heavy)

Hey man,
To be honest.. the duncan distortion is anything but muddy. It has alot of high - highmid type tone but doesnt lack the lowend at all and isnt harsh. But what I noticed some guys do is they try to crank the lowend on their amps and what causes the tone to be muddy.. and then they blame the pickup.

I've been using the Duncan Distortion for couple of years now and I actully switched from the Duncan Custom. i put the DD in my Lespaul and never looked back :)

Good luck!

Thanx a lot man.. ive never used either of them so i wasnt really sure what to do.. i just didnt want to end up with a pickup that has a lot of highs and a REALLy sharp tone that just hurts your ears when u crank it live.. something iwht a rounder fuller tone is the way to go

I guess its one of those things you sorta have to try to see for your self which pickup is for you :)..
