Without writing a long winded explanation, The JB is more suited for lead playing and the distortion is a better all around pickup. The JB also seems to be alot more picky about the guitars it's in, I only use it in alder or ash strat-like guitars.
That tremonti SE is mahogany, I think either a Distortion or a Custom is going to kill in that guitar!!!
awsome.. thanx guys.. i noticed that the distortion has a higher output than the custom, i was just wondering if that would make the distortion muddy?
not necessarily, with the right settings a distortion is pretty tight !!!
I have a Kramer Focus 1000 with an SH-6 in it and it's a metal machine. I'm swapping it out for a custom soon though

You cant get rid of the Green meanie! :smack: LOL
will the alnico magnets in the custom give it a smoother distortion?
Yes but I think you'd be better suited with the Custom!!!
General guideline
Custom = Metal
Custom5 = Hard Rock (the C5 sounds thin to me)
Custom Custom = Classic Rock
Hey man,awsome.. thanx guys.. i noticed that the distortion has a higher output than the custom, i was just wondering if that would make the distortion muddy?
Hey man,
To be honest.. the duncan distortion is anything but muddy. It has alot of high - highmid type tone but doesnt lack the lowend at all and isnt harsh. But what I noticed some guys do is they try to crank the lowend on their amps and what causes the tone to be muddy.. and then they blame the pickup.
I've been using the Duncan Distortion for couple of years now and I actully switched from the Duncan Custom. i put the DD in my Lespaul and never looked back
Good luck!
I guess its one of those things you sorta have to try to see for your self which pickup is for youThanx a lot man.. ive never used either of them so i wasnt really sure what to do.. i just didnt want to end up with a pickup that has a lot of highs and a REALLy sharp tone that just hurts your ears when u crank it live.. something iwht a rounder fuller tone is the way to go
