SH-5 Custom ... decent harmonics?

I think I've almost decided on pickups for sure for my Epiphone LP Custom. I was trying to decide between SH5 custom and SH6 distortion, but I think I'm going to go with the custom. I think my only question is concerning the harmonics of the custom pickup. People have been saying that the distortion has nice harmonics, but I haven't really found anything saying one way or another on how they are from the custom.

For the neck pickup, I think I'm going to go with the jazz. Is that going to be a decent combo? Am I going to be able to get good, balanced clean tones from the middle position?

I apologize in advance if any of these questions are stupid, but I am pretty new to the whole pickup scene.

The Custom has great harmonics and will be a good match with the Jazz.

Yes, the Custom has decent harmonics.

I don't know about the Jazz, but the APH1 was great with the Custom.

Welcome to the board. Your questions aren't stupid at all.

Good combo choice. The Custom has plenty of top end that gives it lots of clarity and makes harmonics jump out.

i have the custom and jazz combo in my strat and it smokes! you will love the middle especially when split. really gorgeous clean tone. there is nothing this combo can't do. well, mayby country. but i guess you won't be using a les paul for country.

Hey I used to have that combo in my Epi LP Custom. It's a great choice and both will complement each other well. Very balanced.
After a while I changed the set into C5/'59 for a more 'organic' and 'vintage/hot' tone.

"Decent Harmonics" is a perfect description of the Custom in terms of harmonics. IMO, the Custom is really no big deal in harmonics compared to the Duncan Distortion, the JB, especially the EMG 81 and the Dimarzio Evolution. im not saying that the Custom is not great... its still capable of producing juicy harmonics, but its just that there are waaay better alternatives.

I agree with Destructone.. I had the Custom Sh-5 pickup in my Lespaul and I liked it, but when I tried the Duncan distortion I liked it even more. Its sorta more like a "hotrodded" custom type tone.

When I tried the Custom, I sorta felt it was lacking some little things here and there. things like a bit more cut, chug and push/drive. The Duncan distortion covers those things and does a really good job at them.

oh.. and I am an Epi Lespaul custom user myself and thats what I have the duncan distortion in.

Cheers

Re: SH-5 Custom ... decent harmonics?

I know this is gonna sound wrong no matter how I say it, but yes it has decent harmonics BUT most EPI LPs don't give you great harmonics or overtones anyway, so it doesn't make a huge difference. I'd rather get a used LP Studio than trick out an Epi LP.

Some Epi LP's work well, especially if that's what he has already. ;)

For being new to choosing pups, I think you made a good choice.

I tried the DD/Jazz and Custom/Jazz combos, but I don't play clean much.

Yes, I am sure you can find a beauty in any bunch - you got me there.

Still - always consider Tokai's, Greco's, Orville's, Ibanez if you want the cheap Les Paul. They might blow your mind. The stock pups tend to rock on some of these as well.

Old Electras and Univoxs can be great as well.
