SH-9 Silverbird

Hi, I always mistake this for the Tony Iommi rails humbucker. I am assuming it is a different beast altogether as it was reviewed as a mid output pickup focusing on pristine cleans as per the HC review I read.

When was this pickup made? Was this before or after the Toni Iommi model? Does the Silverbird share the dual tele bobbins that the Tony Iommi model had requiring you to cut out the route for the pickup on the guitar body? Lastly is it a Custom order only item now from the SD Custom Shop? Also wondering if the Tony Iommi model is still able to be made and if that is a Custom Shop order only?

Thanks for help on these interesting but obscure pickups.

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

Did the Tony Iommi model have a designation like SH-TI or a number like the SH-09?

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

Yeah, one sold not too long ago I was watching it and it went up to around $62.00 IIRC.

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

The SH-9 Silverbird and the old SHTI-1 Tony Iommi share the same construction, but they're voiced very differently. Actually, the bobbins are the same ones used on the STK-T2b Hot Tele Stack; so they're wider than normal humbucker or even Trembucker bobbins.

The Silverbird was a short-lived pickup that was around in the mid-'80s. The Iommi was also short-lived, but that was in the '90s.

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

Thanks Evan. Any ideas of marketing another short lived rail humbucker for this decade? :D

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

I grabbed one off eBay a few weeks ago, but I still haven´t put it in anything....

Does the Silverbird share the dual tele bobbins that the Tony Iommi model had requiring you to cut out the route for the pickup on the guitar body? Yes, this pickup is even larger than a TB series :saeek:
Lastly is it a Custom order only item now from the SD Custom Shop? It is not currently available as a production pickup. Ask MJ from the CS, I think they can still do either ;)
Also wondering if the Tony Iommi model is still able to be made and if that is a Custom Shop order only? No Idea, again ask MJ from the CS :smack:

Tonally the previous owner said that the HC review was pretty spot on, but he found it shrill in most axes. Let´s see what it does in one of mine ;)

Might this be the new Dave Mustaine pup?

I thought we figured out that the Mustaine pup was a cross between the JB and Metal Livewires?

Re: SH-9 Silverbird

I bought 2 in the 80,s and have them fitted to a basswood +maple cap body non trem guitar I made. These pup's are one of the sweetest clear pups I have ever played.I wanted to buy some more about 10 years ago and was surprised that they were discontinued. The sound is clear and uncompressed and bell like. The pup is splitable giving a realy good single coil strat type sound. In fact I use the neck pup in the split position 75% of the time.I have strats also but I prefer the silverbird split sound. Both combined give a very usable quack sound similer to strat pos 4.The bridge position pup can sound a bit too lively but add a bit of gain and it settles. These pup's realy cut through. Maybe not great at getting a thick drop D sound but they make a great blues pup. I would like to hear them on a mahogany bodied guitar.
The down side is that there is nowhere to hide as every note is articulated clearly.Okay SD bring em back.
