Hey guys, just a question, do you guys think theres any shame buying a Epiphone les paul custom? I was thinking of buying one and putting in some nice seymour duncans? any thoughts?

Thanks in advance- Andrew

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

why would there be shame when a real one costs thousands of dollars (I'm cheap, I could barely bring myself to pay the price of a good epiphone). If it plays good buy it.

That said a lot of people prefer agiles to epiphones, and they're much cheaper. look on ebay (I almost bought one, but bought an amp instead)

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

Lots of people here have Epi les pauls and swap out the pickups for duncans. Just make sure you try before you buy. If you like the tone of the guitar unplugged, and it is a good quality instrument, then go for it.

I don't see any shame, just make sure you test a bunch and pick the best of the litter.

Dude...no shame at all...our forum brother Lew has recently said that after a full set-up and a set of Duncans he had one that sounded as good as his 59 Historic RI...my buddy (and forum brother) theodie has a Gold Top Epi that has also had the full on set up and Duncans and he also says it is a killer guitar...In fact I think I might pick up one soon...just remember when you do the pickups, do the pots, switch and caps as well...this makes more of a difference that you could imagine!

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

Yah been gasing a nice les paul, and epi's always seems to be really nice. a nice gold top would be great.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

Hey man i just got my epi les paul, and im pretty impressed with it. Like everyone has been saying, dont believe the "hype". It is foreign, doesnt have the best quality wood, hardware or pups, those are the facts. They look damn pretty, pickups and hardware can all be changed. The bottom line is if you like the way it sounds acoustically, and electrically ( after you upgrade), then its a keeper.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

I have played the Dillion "Gold Top" copy and I loved it, if you can get a hold of one to test its worth a look at.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

Forget about it!

No shame! No shame! Only shame is on the Gibson brothers who find that an Epi with a pickup change can compete with their multi-thousand dollar guitar. Well, at least they get the pretty Gibson logo nice and fat across the headstock.

I'll take the tone and the greens in the pocket. Looks like I'm headed on the Epiphone Train. : party:

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

If that guitar is built well , feels right in your hands and works for YOU then the only shame will be not buying it based on the snobery of others. Dig this; I bought a swamp ash Les Paul Studio because it felt right to me and there's some players out there who don't consider it to be a "real" Les Paul! Well excuuuuuuse me but I don't base my decisions on some wanna- be's illusions of what's real.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

buy an ESP EC-400ats or EC-1000 instead. They will kill any Les Paul.

one thing I've noticed with the epiphone LP's is the superbly crappy fret work. Not only are they tiny little frets where you can feel the fretboard when you play, they are all grooved and sloppy. I just hated the neck and fretboard on the ones I played.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

As mentioned, don't be ashamed of owning an Epi. A good guitar is a good guitar, no matter what the name on the headstock says, IMO.

Sweet quilting on that top, cfc

I don't care what it is, if you like the way it plays and sounds, play it. I don't care if you made out of a shoe box and an old broom.

Gibson Les Paul is like this giant over-grown ego that requires you to pay 2 or 3 times what it's worth just to keep it happy.

The Epi I own, although not an LP, is a great guitar.

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

No shame. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Standard cherry sunburst flametop back when they first came out. At the time, I also owned 2 'real' Gibson Les Pauls - both were Customs. The Epi was solidly built, played excellent, and sounded great AFTER I swapped the pickups and controls out. The factory electronics were junk. The new Epiphones MAY have improved electronics, but I'm not sure.

My Epi LP ended up loaded with a '59 neck, and a Pearly Gates bridge. Sweet combo. And, as I noted in one of my other posts, THAT particluar early-run Epi Les had an actual MAHOGANY NECK, not maple like the newer models. Wish I still had it.

Just as long as you wear shades and a large floppy hat to cover up your face :22: then go ahead and buy it :saeek:

Re: Shame in a EPI les paul???

Are you buying new or used?

If new, I would say check out other options. Like the Japan replicas on Ebay.
Burny/Fernandes
Edwards/ESP
Greco
Tokai (Japan models)
Orville
Epiphone Japan/Elite/ or Elitist

The reason I say this is because the the Japan replicas are usually closer in specs to a real LP than the Korean/Chinese Epi's, Dillions, Tursers, Etc...
Most of those have maple necks, alder tops and/or bodies, etc..
Where as the Japan replicas have mahogany neck and bodies, carved plain maple tops (some with figured veneer over plain maple), etc..

I just assuming your trying to get as close to a real LP sound as possible.

One thought is the
Agile 3500. Those are spec'd out close to a LP. Plus, one version comes with Duncans in it. The horn is funky looking though. But, if you can get past that, it's getting great reviews. www.rondomusic.net

One last thought.
Keep an eye on Ebay for a used Dean EVO Deluxe or Premium.
These are some great guitars. Made in the Czech Republic.
Very, very well made. Can be found for in the $600 range.

aren't EC-400ats and EC-1000 LTDs? the epiphone of ESPs?
