Shellac Guitar Neck Finish

I am considering buying a musikraft neck and they offer their shellac finish as their standard finish for no extra cost. I was just wondering if having a shellac finish alone would be good enough to protect the neck. thanks

Re: Shellac Guitar Neck Finish

i did the neck on my 1966 epiphone in shellac. it feels nice - i shellaced the neck cos a previous owner had painted it black, so i sanded it back to bare, and shellaced it so it would match the yellowing on the rest of the body.
I also shellaced a mahogany tele body . A friend did an entire tele in shellac too. It ages really fast - which might be a good thing for you, but one of the real beauties of shellac is that you can re-coat, or thin it so easily...juts keep a pot of the same shellac for touch ups, and have some metho around for thinning. its not a hard finish like poly, but it can look beautiful if you like aging/checking and its really pretty easy to look after, so its great for getting a new piece to feel old, and its also easy to keep looking brand new if you get dings etc if that is what you desire.

Shellac is generally used as a sealer before finial finishing. Personally I would finish the neck with Tru Oil as it will give the feel of a "raw" neck and offer better protection.

Thanks for the info. Im probably just going to spend a little extra money to have them put a harder finish on it.
