Shielded wire questions.

First time ever wiring a guitar, Im doing a les paul setup and have couple of newbie questions.

I am unclear whether to use shielded wire for the 3-way switch ground, it is a long run but the schematic from seymour duncan shows a thinner wire.

Should all of the shields be grounded when using the rubber coated shielded wire?

Do ground wires even need to be shielded?

Thanks Jebarri

Re: Shielded wire questions.

The ground doesn't need to be shielded since any noise that would hit that wire would go to ground. The principle that shielding works on is a shield surrounds a positive wire which carries a signal. If that positive wire is not shielded RFI can penetrate the wire and the positive wire will introduce that signal as noise. However when surrounded by a shield the shield absorbs the RFI and the signal is sent to the ground and not introduced to the circuit as noise. You should be able to use any wire you like to ground the body of the switch.

cool...
so then can I use the shield on my hot wire as a ground for the tree way toggle?
Thanks, Jebarri

Re: Shielded wire questions.

I once rewired a guitar using unshielded wire. It worked but I got AM radio when it was plugged in. I had to change it out.
