Shin-Juku Drive

Well I bought one of the Shin-Juku drives from MXR. So far I have only been able to run it in front of my Fender Mustang II, but I already have an impression of it. I am probably not the best person to review this since I really have no experience with Dumble style amps or pedals, but I can definitely tell you what my ears hear. Running it into a clean amp model I have found it sounds its best playing bluesy leads, to me it sings and almost gets a violinish tone going on. The pedal does seem to have a lot of mids. I have not gotten to use it in a band situation, but I suspect it would do very well. The range of gain is very good to me, and goes from sounding fairly clean to more gain than I was expecting, but dont expect a metal pedal (not that that is why anyone would buy this) as it doesnt have THAT much gain and its simply not tight enough sounding. The dark switch on it doesnt really do anyting to my ears, but thats really the biggest downfall with the controls. Also, I tried using it before high gain models and I found it to just make it noisier.

Like I have said I dont have any real experience with other dumble inspired pedals or dumble amps (not that many have) so I cant compare this to anything else. But it sounds good on its own and I think is well worth the asking price. Definitely one to try if you're into this sort of thing.

Re: Shin-Juku Drive

I don't know that pedal but sounds like it's a clone of the Shin Dumbloid maybe. Most of the Dumble style pedals are lower gain. I think the exceptions are the larger preamp "pedals" like the Ethos, but that's a different animal. The Dude is a dumble style pedal from J Rockett that, sounds to me as if it has the most gain on tap of the small enclosure pedals. But that's just going by clips. I haven't tried one. I just mention it in case someone is looking for a higher gain Dumble style pedal.

Most of the Dumble "clone" pedal demos are into clean amps, mostly Fenders. Which makes sense. Often with Stratocasters as well. I have a pedal that is a "clone" or close take on a Zen Drive. I actually like using it into a Marshall that's just starting to break up.

Edit. Just checked that Shin Suzuki worked with Dunlop on the pedal. Maybe he's wanting to bring the Dumbloid to the masses.

Re: Shin-Juku Drive

update us when you try it with something non digital.
It is encouraging to hear that you like it so far tho.

Definitely, I made sure to point out that I am just running it through models for a reason. Though I must say the mustang takes pedals better than I thought it would. I keep the mustang in my apartment for the low volume stuff but at my house thats 3 hours away I have my 6505 that I will try this pedal with. Though I wish I could try it with something a little cleaner than the clean channel on the 6505.

Yep, sorry I should have put some of that information on my original post. I wish I could compare it to a dumbloid but I have to wonder how close the two really are. From reading elsewhere it seems the two really are not that close, so I am not sure if this is a good choice if you're looking for a dumbleoid for cheap.

Probably right. Shin likely wouldn't want to give his Dumbloid away, so to speak.

Edit. From some online vid's I just checked out, they aren't close at all. Sounds more similar to the small enclosure pedals that are already out there. Not that it isn't any different. Just more similar to those.
