Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

MJ wound these Custom Shop Quarter Pounds for me. Glossy black top for the neck (12.8K calibrated degaussed magnets), and glossy cream for middle (overwound 5% to 14.8k). I like my middle pups real low and out of the way. These should be a great match in my Vintage White G&L Legacy with a Lil Screamin' Demon already in the bridge. :) Will get them installed this weekend.

Awesome set! If I just could justify myself spending money just for looks... I would get QP with cream bobbin on an instant.

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

Arwin told me they're also doing white now. Not sure about other colors, though.

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

Very nice.

Quarter Pounds are awesome pups. If I were having the custom shop do them for me, I'd go a little bit more and get them tapped, or at least the neck pup.

Keep in touch and let us know how you like the setup.

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

I thought about getting them tapped, but it's really not something I would use often, if at all. I like the clarity and tone of single coils, just have alway preferred humbuckers more, so a fat, beefy single with the P90 qualities of the QP will be fine for me.

There is tapped version of QP, which I really like. You practically get two different pickups for the same position with it.

Do you have some specific idea about the tap you'd like from CS?

Wow, thanks for sharing the story and pictures!

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

You can't miss what you don't know, and you don't know what you haven't tried. A 30-40% tap at about 8-9k would essentially give you two pups for the price of one...a really fat (almost P-90ish) tone at 12.8k, and a glassy but fat Strat tone at 8-9k.

Production QP (SSL-7T/SSL-4T)is tapped at halfway ~7k. It does exactly that, though the extra wire makes it a bit teleish sounding. Not as glassy as normal strat SC.

Personally I think 8-9k would be too much.

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

its not #42 like a vintage strat pup though so 9k of #43 isnt all that different in some ways

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

Interesting. I don't think I'll really need the coil tapping with the G&L's PTB (Passive Treble & Bass) circuit. The volume is 250k, treble is 500k, and the bass is 1meg. I should have all the sounds and tone shaping I'll really need.

Guitar is off to my trusty local shop for the pickup swap and setup. Should have it back on Saturday. :D

Good point. Shows how much effect the non-used coil winds imposes on the tone of pickup I guess. It doesn't sound particularly low wind to me tapped.

I might just have missed it though. I very rarely use bridge on it's own.

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

with the ptb system youll be able to get plenty of great tones with those pups. curious how you find the qp and the lil demon to match up

Re: Shiny Custom Shop Quarter Pounds!

They sound great and match up well with the Lil Demon.

Not quite sure why my pics keep turning horizontal instead of vertical, but oh well.
