Shootout - Dp107 vs. Dp161

Its about an 80's MDF-made Guitar.
(i hope this composite material will sound better than plywood/Multiplex)

I can only effort either one of them, so i cant make a comparison myself.
In case the Dp161 doesn't sound any different to a Blaze, i would stop considering it.

Many Greetings!

I would help you out, but I'm too lazy to look up what those two models are. Can't you just put the names of the pickups in the post? Most of us don't have every model number from every manufacturer memorized.

The Steve’s special is virtually a six string blaze. The mega drive has a thicker midrange than an SS. But it achieves what the SS does for the most part. Some say that the Steve’s special is clinical sounding and it certainly can with the wrong setup. I think that’s why people use it with mid heavy amps. I’m curious what the interest is, since the mega drive is discontinued outside of special order. DMZ would just tell you to get the SS. I think the best representation of the mega drive is on the old Tony Macalpine albums in the 80s if you need to base it on something.

I don’t know what mdf sounds like in a guitar but I don’t think a midrange gutted pickup will make it sound all that good lol. It’s like stringing up an ikea dresser.

It’s kind of funny how SD models differ more by magnet and pole piece than by wind, while dimarzio tends to swaps coils themselves.

Is there no Blaze SixString? I have a Blaze 7String on BRASS BASEPLATE from early 90s :-)))
If Steves Special is just the same as Blaze i probably wouldnt pick it,... maybe if it was on a brass baseplate.

Concerning the mid range, i once put an Invader Sh-8 in a basswood guitar,
its true what they say, i ddnt 'click', it sounded like a 22€ aftermarket pickup. (i later played it in mahogany and it was much more excentric and charismatic for me listeners^^)

So Bowtomecha suspects MDF to suck mid frequencys like basswood (the guitar is not here yet ;-/)

I guess that Megadrive is the best investion i could make. Its still sold in Thomann though dimarzio stopped producing them; they only cost 80€ here in germany and have an ol'school Brass Baseplate.
I would get it second hand for half the price and once the megadrives are sold out in Thomann they will only be available from custom Shop of dimarzio.....

Instant enlightment

A six string blaze would be too much of a specialist anyways, the megadrive would be more applicable i suppose

Maybe some expierence with MDF could give some pup ideas; but better to start a new threads for that ^^ (later)

Many Greetings!
