Short Shaft/Long Shaft, split shaft...

I'm confused. How do I tell if I need long shaft or sort shaft pots? I think they're short shaft, but... I don't know how long is "short" or "long." Also, I would need split shaft pots to attatch the knobs, right? Or is that only for certain types of knobs? Now that I think about it, I remember my tele having a non-split shaft under the knobs, but my schecter has split shaft pots. Would a LP be the same? Is it any kind of knob that doesn't have a tightening screw on it?

Short shaft pots are 3/8" in length, long shaft are 3/4". If you're using Fender-style knobs, you'll want split shaft pots. If you're using dome-style knobs with a set screw, you need solid shaft pots.
