Short vs long leg pickup mounts

Prayin' to Cheeses
Hey so I just got a new bridge pickup for my 79 Les Paul. It has short legs, the one that was in there before has long legs.

If I get the right pickup mount screws does it matter? Can I just mount the thing underneath the pickup ring with shorter springs and screws and be done with it? Or is there some kind of other adapter or something I need?

The pickup winder, if I recall, didn't give a long vs. short leg option when I ordered. I guess I could have asked if I needed it, of course I feel like a dope now.

Re: Short vs long leg pickup mounts

Never mind. I'm dumb. I found some shorter springs and it mounted in the pickup ring just fine. I guess it matters more if it's long leg and won't fit than if it's short leg and floats above the bottom of the pickup cavity.

Re: Short vs long leg pickup mounts

If you don't desire any movement in the bridge cavity you could use some foam rubber underneath the pickup like what used to come inside EH muff fuzz pedal boxes. It's also used on guitars for FR floating bridges behind the trem unit.

As long as you get enough travel to adjust the pickup height you should be OK with the short legs.

If you buy a brand new Duncan pickup in the original unopened box, there will always be new screws and springs and enough gray colored foam to cut a nice humbucker size rectangle out of and to place under the pickup should you desire.

I used to do that hoping it would help keep the pickup in line with the strings.

But I think if you get a new humbucker and it tilts that it tends to be because it's binding from rubbing against the opening in the pickup ring (maybe the opening is too small) or more rarely, rubbing on the pickup rout in the wood.
