Given that while I do play guitar, in the band I'm in, I am the (gasp) bass player. Yes, for all the reasons that you may conjure into mind. So that being said, here's a photo of my more portable, small room rig.
Did Bill Gates threatened to string you up by your toenails if you refused to play bass? I can conjure up a lot of things in my mind, so you might have to be a tad more specific and informative.
Not a bad starter rig. What can you tell us about that bass?
Oh, no. Not the old cliché about the worst/ugliest/least assertive guitarist in the room getting "relegated" to bass duties? That is not a reason to play bass.

It is if one would rather play along with some other like minded individuals that also happen to be friends, than not. I'm definitely not the least assertive, but I certainly know less songs on guitar than either the guitarist or the drummer. Though I did in fact learn the cello as my first instrument before spending several years training as a classical guitarist, so taking up the bass was more like closing a circle.
The bass is an old Johnson P-bass which I was given about 10 years ago. I put a Duncan QP in it, then chiseled out a spot for a Japanese single coil. I then added a Leo Quan Baddass II and a three way switch. Someday I may even get a new neck for it.
Oh and the starter rig is actually to the left of it: a Kustom 16 watt practice amp that I was given along with the bass. Though I did port it, and added a crossover along with a 2" tweeter.
