Should I buy the covered 59, or just buy the cover Seperately?

Re: Should I buy the covered 59, or just buy the cover Seperately?

It does seem a bit high, but then again, along with the cover, you get an additional level of wax potting. So there is some extra labor involved.

On the bright side, if you buy it covered, you can always remove the cover, and have a double-cream 59. ;)

Okay. So if I were to dip (only) the cover in wax (as John's page instructs), and place it on the pup, it would be noisier than the covered pup made by SD?
What if the uncovered 59 pup was quiet to begin with?!!
How does adding the cover correctly add noise?!! :yell:

Artie I think you'd have to specify from a dealer like Lew or Blackrose to get a double creme lightly soldered. I would assume most covered humbuckers in the stores are double black. At least that was the case in the ones I bought over the years.

I have some of those lightly soldered pickups in stock, now that cha mention it.

Wax potting is the best way to eliminate microphonics caused by the nickel cover vibrating. But you can't easily remove the cover again...it'll be glued on by all the wax inside.

But another method that works well is to take a piece of 1/2" masking tape and apply it to the inside of the nickel cover so that when the cover is pressed on the non-sticky side of the tape will be over the six non-adjustable studs.

Press the cover on tight with a clamp and solder it on.

The tape help keeps the cover from vibrating and producing that microphonic squeel.
