Should I direct mount my pick-ups?

Are there any disadvantages/advantages if I direct mount my pick-ups on my non-pickguarded guitars? Humbuckers normally are suspended on pickguards on Strats or those plastic thingies on Les Pauls and I noticed that single-coils are directly mounted on the body of non-pickguarded guitars and I'm tempted to do so with humbuckers.

Thanks!

Re: Should I direct mount my pick-ups?

even on my pickguard covered teles i mount the neck pickup in the wood of a guitar like the early models had. it has a different sound from the pickguard mounted pickups but i wouldn't say any one is better than the other, i just happen to like the way the neck pickup of my tele looks and sounds mounted directly to the wood. I am sure there is a long and draw out arguement for either way but i think i get a little fuller sound out of the neck pickup when it is mounted in the wood.

PS lots of guitars have humbuckers and singles mounted directly into the body. the only had part is finding the wood screws tht are small enough to go through the tabs that hold the pickup and do not strip it out
