Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

When i restring my new gibson for the first time should i do the wraparound thing on the bridge like certain others do also?

What are the pros and cons of doing this? And does it feel different when playing or just sound different?

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

why change? what is your reason?

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

No reason other than i heard it increases sustain without any negatives...so i just wanted to make sure this was true.

More sustain is always welcome :D

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

I do it because the reduced string angle over the saddles gives me more room to rest my hand, so I get better control of my palm mutes. Other than that, I really don't know if it changes sustain or not, nor do I really care.

I have heard that you can screw the tailpiece posts right down however, which is said to help increase sustain do to it being more firmly held to the body, plus it increases the angle over the saddles again. I never bothered to try this; it sustains enough as is.

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

while you've got the strings off, why not put a tonepro's bridge and tailpeice on there?

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

I found it give a little "looser" feel on the strings - probably because of the reduced string angle.

Whats that and what would that do?

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

I dunno, even if it creates a minute amount of increased sustain, it looks a bit funny to me. The biggest reason I wouldn't do it is because I don't want my tailpieces to tarnish with stripes, or develop hairline scratches. Sounds cosmetic, but why do that to your hardware?

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

Tonepros are just standard Gotah bridges with allen set screws, increases sustain and you don't have to worry about that damned bridge falling off when you take the strings off.

what exactly is this wraparound thing you speak of?

Bridge falling off??? Does someone have a pic of this?

Like the single piece wraparound bridges on some gibsons, on the normal two piece tunomatic bridges on a les paul std for example, you can insert the strings going backwards and wrap them around and over the top of the tailpiece to create this wraparound affect.

Zakk wylde does it...and so does scott F to my knowledge ;)

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

I dunno about the sustain improvement.....I do it purely out of feel (flatter surface to rest my palm on) and a slightly lesser tension.

About the only thing to watch, however, is with those Gotoh tailpieces- I've found that the rough edges of the holes can easily slice through your strings (yes, even .12 gauge) so you might want to sort that out first......

A Picture is worth a thousand words (check the string direction in the tailpiece).

I do it to my two Les Paul's. I like the results, myself. Try experimenting with it, and see if you like it. While you're at it, get a light weight tail piece for it. The light weight tail piece will change the tone more than any thing else you can do. The Les Paul Forum, is a good source for all of this information. The web site is www.lespaulforum.com

Others like myself run them UNDER the tailpiece as well, BTW.

It´s all good, just a question of personal preference ;)

Zakk wylde does it...and so does scott F to my knowledge ;)

So what you're saying is instead of feeding the strings THROUGH the tailpiece... you feed them over or under it?

Apparently the tune o matic bridges aren't/weren't even attached to the guitar, but tone pros made the bridge screw into the guitar

Re: Should i do the wraparound on my les paul std. bridge ala zak wylde and scottF?

The proper way to set up a Les Paul, IMO, is to have the steepest string angle possible behind the individual saddles of the tuneomatic bridge. However, you do not want to lower the tailpiece so far that the strings start to contact the back edge of of the body of the tuneomatic bridge. So first adjust your action, and then lower the tailpiece until the strings almost, but don't quite touch the back edge of the body of the tuneomatic bridge. That'll give you real good tone and real good sustain. BTW, if you screw the tailpiece all the way down so that the strings ARE touching the back edge of the bridge, overtime that will cause it to tilt forward. Not good. Lew

What's the benifit of running them that way?
