Should I get a Gibson ES-339?? Help! Paging all 339 owners!

Well I have been "gassing" for a semi-hollow guitar for a little while now. Right now the guitars I have are two Gibson Les Paul Studio Fadeds (one with 59s and the other with PGb/AntiquityN; I leave one in standard tuning and one is Eb), two American Standard Telecasters (one is 1994 and the other is 2000, both are 100% stock), a Partscaster Tele, and a Yamaha acoustic.

I went to visit my uncle all of last week, and while I was there, he took me to a guys house that is his guitar tech and he also runs a small guitar shop out of his house. While I was there checking out all of the gear that he had for sale, I spotted a nice Gibson ES-339 in the corner. It was actually one of the guy's personal guitars, but he said anything was for sale for the right price. Lol So I sat down and played it for a while and I really, really liked it! We started chatting and figuring out a deal. After all was said, he said that he would take $1,400 for it (which from what I have seen is a pretty good deal, I think?). He bought the guitar brand new a few years ago, its the sunburst model (or whichever the burst finish is that they use on those), he has all of the original paper work and case, and I would probably give it a 9/10 on condition.

I wanted to buy the guitar right then and there, but I didn't have all of the money to just buy it out right from him. He said that he always takes trades for other guitars and gear though, so I went and grabbed some of my guitars that I might consider getting rid of to see if we could work something out. The two guitars that I brought in were my Partscaster Tele and my 2000 American Standard Tele. I figure the Partscaster is worth around $300-400, and then whatever an American Standard is going for at the moment. I got the American Standard couple months ago from the original owner. It was bought new in 2000 and a month or two after it was bought something happened and the owner just quit playing music, so it has sat locked up in the case under their bed since then, until I bought it from them a couple months ago. So it is in fantastic condition and it is probably the closest to a new guitar that I have ever seen from a 13 year old guitar (or any used guitar). Also, it has the ash body, blonde finish, and a maple board. I still really like this tele, but I do like my '94 just a little bit more.

After he looked over both of the guitars, he said that he would take the two Teles plus $450 for the ES-339. So now I am just trying to decide if I want to get rid of my Blonde American Tele or not, or if the 339 would really be worth it. Like I said, I still really like this Tele, but I really liked the 339 too, and I can't help but think that it might be a really awesome guitar to have (and I do still have another American Tele). What are your thoughts? Should I go with the deal? Do you think its a pretty good deal? And for any ES-339 owners, how do you like your's? Thanks a lot for any input or help!!

What does the 339 offer that the Les Pauls cannot cover? Conversely, are there things that a Les Paul Studio can do that the 339 cannot? In short, would it be wiser to trade one Gibson for another?

Of the Fender Am Std Telecasters, I would be more inclined to offload the 1994 than the 2000.

Finally, how far are you away from being able to afford the 339 for cash?

Re: Should I get a Gibson ES-339?? Help! Paging all 339 owners!

I have a 359 which is a smaller version of a 355. I also have a 335. I prefer my 335. It has a better overall tone then the 359 does. But the 359 is a little more comfortable from a players perspective not that a 335 is hard to play but the body size is bigger. Due to the body size I just think it sounds better

If you really like the Tele, offer him more cash. Don't sell it/trade it if you aren't comfortable with it. You may regret it vim not saying to not get the 339 but keep the Tele if you are uncertain of the trade. You won't be disappointed with the 339 but you may be disappointed that you don't have your Tele anymore

I'd do it. When his ES-339 came out, it sold for around $2000, and now it's up to $2600.

Fenders and partscasters are a dime a dozen, and you can always find another one you like, because you'll only have to come up with $600 to get another used US Tele. To find another ES-339, it's unlikely you'll find another trade deal, and it'll be $1700+ used.

For you to buy the 339 outright for $1400 is a good deal if you have the cash. If not, he's figuring he's giving you $950 for your two guitars, and losing his 339 for $450.

What GJ said. Plus, offload a Les Paul instead of a Tele.

I love my 339. It's my favourite player. (My strat is still my favourite, but that's for sentimental reasons). I know a lot of people who have them find it closer to a les paul than a 335, but my experience has been a little different. I find clean it is more 335, and then as you get past mild gain and into rock/metal territory, it gets more Les Paul. If that makes any sense. Anyway, it's very versatile. The size makes it very comfortable to play, both sitting and standing.

1400 (or equivalent) is a very good price. I bought mine about a year and a half ago for 1700.

Yeah, the 339 is going to sound much more similar to your LP than a 335 due to the Mahogany back that is, essentially, just a weight relieved solid body back.

I'm going to disagree here, 1994 could be great, or terrible. Lots of Fenders still had 5 piece bodies with with a veneer glued over so it looks like one piece....AND lots of swimming pool routing, if one cared.

I wouldn't get rid of 2 guitars for 1... I'd rather trade a Tele and cover the difference in cash... Also trade the Tele you're less inclined to play or miss... Lots of guys get some form of remorse after they let a piece of gear go... Especially if it was a good one!

Re: Should I get a Gibson ES-339?? Help! Paging all 339 owners!

Hey guys, thanks for all of the input and responses! Sorry I haven't been back on here for a while to reply to the thread.

I've thought about just trying to buy it out right, but I think I might still just try to trade for it since I have less money tied up in the trades than I would have in just buying it. He wants $1,400 for it, but with the amount of money that I have in the 2 teles, if I trade him both of them and $450, I will only have $1,285 in the whole deal. So if you look at it that way, I would be getting a $1,700+ guitar for only $1,285. If I do try to just buy it, I think I might be able to come up with the rest of the money in about a month or two, so that might be an option. As far as the trades go, some of you mentioned trading a Gibson for a Gibson, but honesly I'm really attached to both of my Les Pauls and they are both my main gigging guitars, so I don't really want to give either one of them up (I love my teles too, but I'm a lot less attached to them than the LPs). And for the Partscaster, its a nice guitar, but I'm not really attached to it at all, and I've actually already had it up for sale for a short while.

And about the body construction on the 339... from what I read on the specs, I thought it was all a laminate maple/birch construction, not a mahogany back. Or does it have a mahogany back?

You're right, it's laminate construction, just like a 335 but smaller. The 336, I believe, is the mahogany back hollowed with maple top. For 1300, you can't go wrong. If for some reason you decide it's not for you, you will probably turn a profit if you flip it. But I'm guessing you will love it...What's not to love?

Re: Should I get a Gibson ES-339?? Help! Paging all 339 owners!

Don't do anything before playing a 335.

Two American Teles plus more cash is too much. Nice ones are not *that* common.

Yeah I really liked it a lot when I played it! I'm really looking forward to making a deal on it.

I found out that the guy actually has a 335 for sale too, so I might check that out also whenever I go back. Don't worry though, I'm not trading two american teles plus cash for it, ( I'm not completely crazy haha! :) )I'm only trading one american tele (my least favorite of the two I have), a cheaper partscaster Tele, and some cash. If for some reason I like the 335 even better than the 339, I might trade to make a deal for it instead.

Re: Should I get a Gibson ES-339?? Help! Paging all 339 owners!

Quick, before that hobbyist changes his mind! Steal his 339 or 335! Those weak minded sellers are hard to come by. Always go for high end Gibsons. They're the best guitars.

I know I wouldn't part with my 335 for some guy's trade offer.

I got my Gibson Memphis ES-335 from a guy who special ordered it from the Custom Shop for $3500. He admired it in it's case for a couple years, until I showed up 20 minutes after his ad popped up on Craigslist for $2200 with $1850 being his lowest price over the phone.

It's in the top 3 of the best guitars I've ever owned, and I'm never selling it. Gibson Semi Hollows will always be a strong favorite for anyone who owns one and bonds with it.
