should i replace my single coil or humbucker??

Hi all.

I've got a squier fat strat that currently has a duckbucker (bridge model) in the middle, and a stock neck single coil and stock hummer. I've got a gift certificate and i want to buy a pickup, however its probably the only one i'll be able to afford for quite some time. If it were your guitar, would you replace the single coil (i was thinking SSL1 vintage staggered), or the hummer (probably one of the 'custom' series)??

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I'd replace the single. In a Fat Strat, I tend to think of the two singles as a "system". The humbucker as the "other". Get that 1-2-3 sound down . . . then go for the complement.

How about replacing the single coil with another duckbucker. It'll match the middle and you'll be fully humbucking in that guitar.

Alternatively (and I think this is what I would do), sell the duckbucker and buy two nice singles for the middle and neck. SSL1s, APSs etc. Get some really nice vintage Strat tones in those positions.

I guess what I'm saying is make the middle and neck match!

that does make sense, but i don't think i want another duckbucker, and i dunno if i have enough money for 2 pickups.... how well do used pickups hold their value??

I don't know how well a Duck would hold resale, but you could try trading that and the gift certificate for a pair of singles that aren't that pricey but still good.

I bet a pair of used Fender CS '62s would sound great and not cost too much.

Buying the pickups used could be an idea, or trading as well. Check the trading post in this forum for starters.

If I was in your position, I'd buy a new hum for the bridge and switch the duckbucker to the neck. I don't have that much use for the middle single, especially when used on its own.

I would agree with Johtosotku.. buy a new hum and swithc the duckbuker to the neck.....
