Should Kinman Woodstocks be SUPER bright?

Since I know a lot of people here have a LOT more pup experience than me I wanted to ask:
I just installed a set of Woodstocks and they are very quiet for sure but extremely bright. Searing and a bit thin really. Is that normal?
They replaced Mex Strat pups. Thanks.- Rob McFee

Re: Should Kinman Woodstocks be SUPER bright?

I have a set of Kinman Avn '62 's in my Kramer Stagemaster Deluxe. They sound super-sweet and very bluesy. Not '59 PAF kinda fat, but very nice.

I have tried out the Avn Woodstocks, and I must say they are LOUD compared to the '62s. Not thin sounding at all, but they do sound RAW and very powerful for a single-coil.

I live in Brisbane, Australia and I have met Chris Kinman and he took me on a factory tour etc etc. He's more than happy to answer questions, and normally posts replies within 2 days average. Try emailing him.

Try adjusting pickup height. I'm not sure if this is 100% correct, but I think that if you moved the pickup further away from the strings you'll get a warmer sound with a bit less output volume, but less string pull and greater sustain.

Hope this helps.

It's very important to adjust the pickup height properly with those pickups. Kinman pickups are extremely sensitive to height adjustment, more so than regular pickups.

Ditto. I have a couple Woodstocks in a tele and they are not unduly bright at all, so you might want to check the height info on his website.

The other thing is that maybe you have a too high valued pot in there or something?

Just FYI, there are a lot of Kinman threads on this forum, maybe if it continues to bother you you can email one of the Kinman users. http://www.thefenderforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=29
