Shout out to the Custom Shop

And Arwin who kept in touch and went the distance with each and every email. Even got a pair of Antiquity covers with the pickup since I mentioned a p90 restoration.

S Deco wind in a p90 humbucker platform. I used a dogear ring that allows a minihumbucker to mount. I also sanded it down a bit to allow the p90 humbucker to fit. Bobbins took a bit of extra time to manufacture since black is the stock color. Looks like 42 AWG wire at 9.7k. Definitely sounds like a humbucker to me since the middle position is harmonically complex and rich. Everything I love about a p90/HB setup is in that middle position tone. Very happy \m/

Re: Shout out to the Custom Shop

Very cool. The custom shop does amazing work and I've loved every custom shop pickup I've had. I hope you have amazing results with it for years to come.

I currently have a set of Greenies and a Brobucker, but I'm going to have some double cream APH II's that I have rewound into something custom, just not sure yet what or when.

Congrats again!

Re: Shout out to the Custom Shop

What are the Greenies in? Haven't tried those, but the brobucker is a great pickup. It fits the bill in a bright guitar I have.

Re: Shout out to the Custom Shop

Is that their “parchment” color on the bridge pickup?
It looks pretty close to the Dimarzio creme color...

No, I requested cream bobbins. Parchment is significantly lighter. Since this is technically a p90 model, I was able to order the bobbins this way. My requests for cream humbuckers *are usually shot down.

Wow, that is a rather unique pickup...congrats!

Re: Shout out to the Custom Shop

It definitely sounds like a humbucker for sure. MJ tweaked the wind a bit, but it's based off a S Deco, so it has an overwound PAF flavor. Firm low end, complex midrange, and a top end sizzle. It gave the bridge a good airy PAF vibe that can easily get aggressive. It retains great clarity throughout. Extremely dynamic. You can get a variety of tones based off pick attack and working the knobs. Shimmering clean tone. I love it the most in the middle position of the dogear p90 which is suppose to be an early Gibson p90 wind (low output '52-53 range) with A3s. Its a Rewind Cool P90. There's a lot of magic at work when you combine that many coils and magnets together. I live on that middle position about 50% of the time. Money well spent.

Sorry, I missed this until now. The Greenies are a special PAF wind with the magnet flipped in the neck pickup, so when you play in the middle position the pickups are out of phase with each other. It's a sound to emulate the 59' LP that was once Peter Green's while he was in Fleetwood Mac and more recently owned and played on countless songs by Gary Moore.

I bought them because I love Gary's tone on a lot of his songs, but I really don't use the middle position very much. These are just really good PAF pickups on their own and sound absolutely terrific for classic and hard rock, plus blues of course. Completely worth the $300.
