signs of speaker damage

is it easy to tell visually if a speaker is slightly damaged, or is it mostly via how it sounds? I know a gaping hole in the cone would be one sign, but are there others?

Re: signs of speaker damage

Pressing on the cone can reveal a rubbing voice coil. Just move the cone in and out a few times with light, even hand pressure, and it should be silent. If it goes "scritch scritch scritch", that's bad.

A rubbing voicecoil can result from excessive mechanical impact (like the cab being dropped) which can knock the magnet out of line, or it could be a sign of past over-power operation. When slightly too much power is applied, the speaker heats up, which can melt glue and allow the whole assembly to warp out of shape.

Of course, gross amounts of power just cause the speaker to burst into flames, which is a more obvious defect. I saw it happen once, to some one else's PA speakers. It was funny as hell.

Re: signs of speaker damage

cool tips. now I want to make it burst into flames, that'd be rad.

this is on my marshall lead 12 combo by the way. I'll likely drop in a tube 10 speaker anyhoo, but I need to know these things to diagnose.

Re: signs of speaker damage

WARNING...PUSHING ON A SPEAKER CONE WITH YOUR HANDS CAN CAUSE A SPEAKER THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE TO BE PUSHED OUT OF ALLIGNMENT AND THEN BECOME DAMAGED!

If you have a speaker that you think might or might not work, hook it up to an amp and PLAY through it with a clean tone as a modest volume...listen fopr any scratchy rubbing sounds or any notes that tend to sound funny or sound like all the sudden there is a distortion pedal on that one note...

If you get any odd noises the speaker likely has a rub starting, if you hear nothing except beautiful guitar notes the speaker is likely fine.

I have to add one more thing...

PUSHING ON A SPEAKER CONE WITH YOUR HANDS CAN CAUSE A SPEAKER THAT IS PERFECTLY FINE TO BE PUSHED OUT OF ALLIGNMENT AND THEN BECOME DAMAGED!

Re: signs of speaker damage

It's just a warning...while it is true you can tell about a speaker like that it's true you can kill them like that too...I know because I've done it myself.

Re: signs of speaker damage

Note I said "light, even hand pressure". I use two hands, one on either side of the speaker. You should also have some idea of how far the speaker should move. Don't go pushing on a vintage greenback, expecting the 3/4" of travel you'd get out of those subs in the back of your car.
