Signs to tell if a neck is finished?

I just scored a pretty nice, unused Warmoth scalloped neck off of ebay. It's maple with a maple fretboard so I know it needs to be finished. The guy I bought it from doesn't seem to know if it's finished; but when I got it this afternoon I realized it feels and looks sort of like it has a satin finish on there. I don't know how to tell if it's finished or not - my only experience with maple necks is with my sticky, glossy Fender neck.

How could I tell if my neck is finished? I was prepared to sand it down and slap on some danish oil, but it's already silky smooth and the grain (birdseye maple) looks pretty highlighted - leading me to believe it is finished.

I was going to put on the finish tomorrow morning - if it's already finished should I not go through with that?

This feels like a stupid question. :smack:

I really can't tell, all I can say is that the inside of the tuner holes looks coarse and doesn't have the coloring of the rest of the neck - I know it's not finished in there. The rest of the neck is really silky smooth - definitely NOT coarse or unfinished looking and has a shine to it. The birdseye comes out real well too. It says on the back of the neck "Warranty void if without hard finish", leading me to believe it might not be, but I think they put that on all Warmoth necks.

Looks finished to me too, bare wood wouldn't reflect the flash like that.

Hey,I'm a chef.Who better to say it.besides,Fretfire already covered the intelligent sounding answers.
BTW Fretfire, very nice work on your neck.

Mucho thanks on both counts John :laugh2:. I wound up spraying about nine coats on over a week or so. It's not quite as "satiny" as I'd hoped but it turned out great regardless.

EDIT: Forgot to whore a pic of the final product, please forgive me. The neck is from USA Customs by the way.

Just burnish it with 0000 steel wool and rub out with a clean cotton cloth after brushing off the excess wool.

Edit-you just had to make me jealous didn't you

:smack: I didn't even think of that... thanks. Serves me right I guess :laugh2:
