Silent DI Cranked Amp Recording With The "Julius" Loadbox (5 different amps/clips)

Just made a video testing the new "Julius" Load-box/Dummy load I got off Reverb from the guy who makes them (8 ohms / 200 watts). This is a "reactive" design & that's supposedly better than "resistive" for keeping the amp's dynamics/feel/tone etc intact/unchanged.. and that was pretty much my experience with it ..so I'd say that's pretty accurate :bigthumb:

Recorded with my old Zoom MRS 1044 digital multi-track recorder. (Amp's 8 ohm "speaker" output -> Behringer Ultra G DI Box -> Little Bear {Cheap Chinese} Cab sim pedal -> Zoom MRS 1044 recorder.)

Guitar (Jackson DK2 w/Lace Deathbucker bridge pup) plugged straight into the front of the amps - no effects in front or in the loop - no bass guitar track.

All the amps were cranked up to about 2 o'clock (volume).

I thought I'd record it completely "dry" so that the differences in the amp characteristics/tone with the load-box in place, are'nt diluted or messed with...also used the cheap chinese cab sim pedal for that reason (it's fixed EQ and can't be adjusted).

Anyway, sweet little box that's very well made with quality components & does the job it's meant to really well. I've always wanted to be able to record that cranked amp tone (silently) for the extra weight/presence/dynamics/harmonics that I've been missing with my usual low volume recordings and this is certainly excellent in that regard. Now I just need to buy an actual bass guitar & lay down some bass tracks and things should start sounding pretty cool (hopefully) :D

Laboga FTW

hey do you have the reactive version of the julius box? what's that mean - does it take a battery? he doesn't show the innards - can't be much in there though, huh? is there a heat sink?

Haha ..The Laboga? .well maybe...I'm just glad they all sound so different recorded. Sometimes when your out in front you don't really realize that..

Regarding the Loadbox..yeah..there's hardly anything to it..

Pic/info here in this thread..

But then this is what the Two Notes Torpedo Live looks like on the inside..it's basically (board on the left) the same thing (resistors/inductor/heatsink) but with a few chips & caps thrown in for the display/controls/cab sim/other bells & whistles.

And price-wise that's $1000 vs $70 (which sounds great & does'nt blow up.. ie a no-brainer for me :lmao:)

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I was curious how the Julius Reactive Load Box is holding up for you?

Also, the big difference in price between the Torpedo and just a load box is that the Torpedo is also a specialized computer that runs impulse responses. It's not just a load box. If you got something like a Torpedo Captor, which is a load box without the IRs, you'd need to use an IR loader like Wall of Sound to apply cab IRs.

No problem ...it's holding out fine man. Sounds great with the new Mooer Radar IR Loader pedal I just bought. At $150 for The Mooer & $60 for The Loadbox, that's still a way better deal than the Torpedo Live (one with The IR Loader) @ $1000..

The Mooer is an excellent Sounding pedal that has some great sounding built-in cab sims & lets you load any others you choose to as well...

Her's couple of clips with The Mooer & The Julius Loadbox (w/ two different amps)

This one's with my Goldea 15 watt Chinese lunchbox head.. (El84's)

It's all dry with just a tiny bit of reverb on the lead (solo) track & then mastered with a preset from Ozone.

..and here's another..same thing, but with the lead & rhythm guitar tracks replaced with tracks from my 30 watt Cicognani Brutus Live head (2x5881's) & the whole thing mixed again..

^^ Those are actually my first "full mixes" in Reaper as well... :lmao: so hopefully I get better at things (though I will say I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out already :D)
