Single 12 cabs

Just curious - who has experience, good or bad, with single 12 extension cabs. I know Mesa makes them as do a few other companies such as Carvin etc. Obviously my interest is portability but what do you loose? I was looking at getting two of them so that i can take advantage of stereo effects. Thanks

Well my advice (Not related to brands) would be to get one that offers the option of a half back (you can remove a panel and make it like an open back combo amp), it's a great tonal option that there is just no reason not to include. If it is a sealed back though, put a telescoping port in it so you can tune the low end response. For small stereo rigs they are ideal, although for stage work a vertical 2X12 will probably do you better, and since most PA doesn't run stereo, will you don't have to worry about that, along most 2x12 are stereo splittable. Of course you get a much better stereo image the farther aprt the drivers are from each other. As far as what you lose? Not anything really, although most people use 1X12 for adding onto a 1x12 combo, just to get a bit more air moving, and hear themselves better.
For small club gigs, two 1x12 cab on amp stands should due you well. The Peavey 1x12 cabs are nice, but the drivers themselves could be better, they are half back. They are very reasonable and sturdily built. You can also weight a small cab to give it more interia, and fight the effects of vibration ... it helps it project a little better. Of course I don't know to many people that try to blast people out of a hall with 1x12 cabs anyway,so that shouldn't be much of a problem. I personally feel that as light as a 1x12 is that it should be well made, and have a driver that is very effecient and doesn't break up ... that may not be your thing though. Just my two cents. Others please ...Bump...

Re: Single 12 cabs

Avatar makes a .... oops, just checked their site and the 1x12 guitar cab I bought from them doesn't show up anymore.

Here's a good article from Duncan Amps that talks about cabinets from the perspective of building one - same factors apply to buying one. Kent has a good idea about the removeable back panel. I'm using mine with a TradeMark 10 amp. It does fine for Marshall & Mesa tones, but it doesn't really get the Fender sound all that well. The shape is almost a cube and the back has an opening about 1/3 of the total area.

Hope this helps,

Chip

Re: Single 12 cabs

I use a Mesa theile cab w/ the 200w EV speaker. They don't make this speaker anymore. The cab is excellent. The 200w speaker can handle pretty much anything, & the ported cab gives extra bass response. I take the back off a lot which opens the sound up a little. Great cab, but heavy for a 1x12. U can find them used w/ the EV, but they are in demand cuz the speaker rocks.

Re: Single 12 cabs

I to use a 1x12 with an EV from time to time. Kicking speaker with it's own uniqe sound. This speaker never breaks up!

Re: Single 12 cabs

I have a 1x12 with a Carvin "vintage" style driver in it. It's cool, but I prefer my bigger cabs now ... I used to use the 1x12 to track solos, but now I use a Roland VG88 ...

Re: Single 12 cabs

I've been out for a couple of days but just wanted to say thanks - this is excellent feedback and gives me plenty to consider and check out - Thanks for the input.

Re: Single 12 cabs

There's nothing wrong with a 112 cabinet. I used them for about 10 years and played everything from bars to gymnasiums with them. They don't move as much air as a two or four 12 cabinet, but they'll get plenty loud. I still use my 112 Spyder for certain situations because I just don't need 160 watts of guitar system. So, you don't really LOSE anything. You won't have stereo capability, but there is something very nice about that mono blast.

Probably the nastiest 1X12 on the planet. Has a vintage 30 and runs around $475-450. I have never checked one out myself but hear they are great.

Dunno about that. Personally, I find them to be a bit too 'pointy'; ie, directional.

A 212 closed back or 412 closed back cabinet is the same way. They're all like standing in a light beam. My own 212 doesn't focus for 18 feet and at that point, it'll cut heads off. They're all directional unless they're open back.

I've heard that the pointyness helps when using tri-stereo rigs. They tend to keep better stereo separation because they don't spread as well, and the big 2x12 or 4x12 dry center channel fills out the rest..

That would make a lot of sense, since an open back is radiating a whole lot more into the room and a closed back ...

I should've been more clear and added ... 'with my back to the amp, compared to a 4x12'. Oops!
