single coil neck pup to match JB

Which single coil pup or which humbucker single coil sized pup matches the JB the best, in the neck. I mostly play blues, classic and hard rock.

Re: single coil neck pup to match JB

I'd say the JB JR neck or Little 59 neck for minihumbuckers.

If you want a real single coil the SSL-1 or APS-1 or the Antiquitys will be slightly overpowered by a JB.

Maybe a 1/4 pounder?

(Or a Big & Tasty? :laugh2: Sorry....we watched Super Size Me the other night and I've had rancid cheeseburgers on the brain since then. :saeek: )

Thanks Lew
I still am waiting for my JB to arrive, I ordered it back in Dec from Guitar Elelctronics, but they only dispatched it on the 10 of Feb.They said they were out of stock.
Will the JB over power the APS1 as well or the Quater pound?
I like a lot of Deep Purple by the way.

I don't know. I think the JB would probably overpower most single coils.

I had a JB in the bridge of my Strat for about a year and tried various single coils trying to get the balance right. I even had Lindy Fralin wind me a pair of his Blues Specials and overwind them as hot as he could. He put about as much wire on them as the bobbins would hold and they were still overpowered by the JB.

A Surfer bridge works great in the neck, with a JB in the bridge.

A Surfer bridge is a 9.5K to 10K pickup. Never tried it as a neck pickup. I guess it's worth a try. BTW, I thought you quit! :laugh2: That was fast...no actually average. About two weeks. Welcome back. Lew

the cool rails will approximate a vintage humbucker. i reckon it will match the jb pretty well.

Thats somewhat I am looking forward at. vintage humbucker. Alternativly even a total single coil tone wont be bad . Perhaps a Duckbucker?

Re: single coil neck pup to match JB

Ok the tone I am looking at is exactly this . Blackmore tone in 'Soldier of fortune". I figure he was using his strat neck picup with the tone turned down all the way. But that's the tone I want .Hmmm may be the APS1?

Re: single coil neck pup to match JB

the jb is a pretty high output pickup. any vintage-type single coil will be weak in comparision. as for the rails or the lil'/jr series, you can split them for an almost singlecoil tone. of course, you can also split the jb for more versatility.

if i am not mistaken, blackmore uses quarterpound for strat. you may want to check that out as well. i believe the quarterpound and hot for strat are the highest output true singlecoils available from duncan.

Re: single coil neck pup to match JB

If you have you're mind set on APS's, I'd go with the APS-2's (flat). They're a bit thicker and fuller in the mids than the staggered versions, which should better match the JB's character. Also, when mixing the pickups, you could split the JB. It would go down to about 8K and should match up well with an APS-2 in the neck.

Re: single coil neck pup to match JB

hmmm I guess I wld choose between The APs flat, quaterpound, cool rails or lil59
