Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

Good afternoon, all! New member here! As the title suggests, I would like to know what everyone might recommend for a single coil neck pickup to pair with a Pegasus bridge. I’ve had some say that a middle position SSL-6 would pair well. But I want everyones opinions! Thanks!

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

I'm not necessarily keen on he SSL-6 in the middle, maybe the -6T.

What do you expect to get out of the middle and neck positions?

Welcome to the forum!

What do you mean by 'goes with'? Output level? Tone? What are you looking for in a neck pickup (and what don't you like about the current one)?

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

I currently use a Sterling Stingray that has a Pegasus bridge pickup. I don’t like using neck humbuckers and much prefer the tonal quality of a single coil in that position. With that being said, the guitar will then only have two pickups: the single coil neck and the Pegasus bridge. I was recommended a middle position SSL6 to have in the neck to better match the output of the Pegasus. I typically use the neck pickup for single note leads and rhythms, a lot of ambient type stuff, where as the bridge is more for post-hardcore and prog.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

There is no middle position SSL-6, only a standard and RW/RP. Unless you plan on splitting the Pegasus so the screw coil is active and combining it with the SSL-6, I see no reason to get an RW/RP model, and if you are splitting the Pegasus I would go with the SSL-6T model.

SSL-6 is good for single note leads, but has a lot to be desired for a traditional single coil sound.

Maybe you aren't looking for a traditional sound, but I can't tell. If you're going to put a darker pickup like an SSL-6 in the neck, you might as well go noiseless since all you usually lose is the top end. Some complain about noiseless single coils not having the "feel" of a true single coil, without going into any detail about what that really means, or consider that this impression may be due to some other reason than merely the general concept of "noiseless" which can be obtained through a variety of methods.

As far as output goes, I think the SSL-6 is a tad hot in the neck against a Pegasus.

...and FWIW, I had an SSL-6 in the neck position of one guitar for two decades.

Thank you. I have no plans to split the Pegasus at all. As far as the SSL6, that’s what I meant, the RW/RP. It wouldn’t make much sense to have it. I’m not looking for the traditional single coil tone, really. Just something that would mesh well with the Pegasus either clean or overdriven.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

You're quite welcome.

I can't tell if you think you need RW/RP or not. It makes no difference, either way.

Honestly, per the topic of choosing a neck pickup to go with a Pegasus, consider the Duncan STK-S4B (the bridge model). Pay no mind to the output graph and tone chart. It's fatter and slightly darker than a vintage single but will have more treble than the next step up: the STK-S7. The next higher is the STK-S6 which is comparable to the hot SSL-6, but with a less glassy high end, which isn't very noticeable in the neck spot anyway.

If you can be more specific about what you want tonally, I might be able to give a better recommendation.

Actually, those options would work fairly well, I think. See, a lot of my single coil tones are based on some pickups my dad wound about 15 years ago and he never told me what they were based on. The neck has a thicker low end, but retains a lot of clarity, it’s rather woody sounding, but it’s really nicely overdriven.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

Woody would be an STK-S7

Woodier still would be a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage 54 Pro.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

Thank you for the tips. I’ve been checking out the pickups you’ve recommended and I seem to like the STK-S6 the best. But pickups aren’t all that expensive. I can always get one of each. Haha.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

STK-S6 is as hot as the SSL-6. Seymour Duncan's output indicators and BMT graphs for their noiseless line of pickups is a complete joke.

Some think it's no big deal, but for this line of pickups the misinformation can and will steer people wrong.

Yikes :/ Do you recommend the STK-S4B over the STK-S6?

In the neck position against a Pegasus, yes.

The -S7 is OK too if you want a darker top end.

In order from brightest/weakest to darkest/hottest:

STK-S10N (thin, but not glassy)
STK-S4N & -S4M
STK-S4B
STK-S7
STK-S6
STK-S9

I have no idea where the STK-S10B belongs. Anecdotes put it all over the map.

Thanks man! I really appreciate that.

Re: Single Coil Neck to Match Pegasus Bridge

Glad to be of some help.

While we’re on the topic of neck pickups, I have a similar scenario with a P90 neck pickup and a Pegasus bridge. Again, similar instance. Any neck P90s you’d recommend?

Wish I could but I'm unable to help you with that one.
