Single coil potting?

Hey guys, just bought a JV strat. I want to keep it all classic strat with singles. Considering the Antiquity set. Question is, my Diezel and Mesa are pretty high gain. Do single coils need to be wax potted to prevent squeel? I've never seen reference to any singles being potted. Are any true single coils potted? Will the Antiquities be OK at loud performance volume, or should I go SSL-1's?

Re: Single coil potting?

only if there is a feedback issue. in the old days nothing was potted, but now days most things are.
ive never had a problem with my antiquitys feeding back at gig volumes, and if you did you could always have them potted later on

Re: Single coil potting?

I NEVER have. EVER. Not even on a 10k un-potted. I stopped potting my single coils and pretty much only pot my humbuckers now.

Re: Single coil potting?

If it's not a vintage pickup or a boutique pickup made to be a hardcore replica of a vintage pu, or otherwise some specially ordered no-potting custom job from a bigger maker, it's potted. Stock pickups on major guitar makers are potted so your JV pu's are potted and you should have zero squeal problems.

Re: Single coil potting?

Have have a question along these lines -

Im looking to pot single coil pickups in an imitation strat. I have found through research to use epoxy resin. When I search for epoxy resin in my browser it comes up with many products that seem to be more 'glue' than something that I would use for this objective?
Can someone expand on the exact nature of epoxy resin and perhaps suggest a retailer for purchase?

Re: Single coil potting?

What were the reasons for using epoxy?

IME, wax is much easier to do, less nasty fumes, easier clean up, and more effective. I've had several epoxy potted pickups that squealed, I've never had a wax potted pickup squeal. (So I'm suggesting forget epoxy, do it with wax.)

Edit: I think it's much harder for the epoxy to penetrate the coil. It always stays pretty viscous and clings to itself. Wax thins out and creeps in everywhere.

Re: Single coil potting?

Most of my research has come from a book called 'Guitar Electronics for Musicians' - although I have hit up many websites as well. The book actually suggested synthetic beeswax for saturation of the coil (this process lets the wax melt in towards the core of the coil) and epoxy resin for potting.

Re: Single coil potting?

You just need a glue pot that heats up to 145-150F with a thermostat that will keep it in that range. Then a mix of 3:1 parafin and beeswax and you're all set, though I like to use a little more beeswax than most. 10 minutes oughta do it.

Re: Single coil potting?

If you're determined to cover it in epoxy, search "epoxy resin encapsulation" or "epoxy resin potting", as yeah without that, you'll mostly get adhesives.

But you really don't need to do that. There's not much advantage to sealing it all up in epoxy. Once the wax has penetrated the coil, it won't squeal.
