Single Coil Rec's

Hey all, my dad is thinking about making a warmoth strat after seeing how nice their components are for the price. He is probably going to go SSS (although I've tried to convince him to go humbucker bridge single neck) he wants SSS. He also wants a humbucker tone. I recommended a Dimarzio Super Distortion - S for the bridge along with a clapton mid boost. I pointed him to the YJM Fury's for the other two positions, but I think he should look at more options. I have told him to check out Revel pickups (I just got a set from them custom wound A2 bridge and A4 neck) and Lace pickups. He wants an out of phase 2/4 sound, the ability to split the bridge, a full humbucker sound (or at least a close approximation) and at least one pickup to give a vintage strat tone (loose term, maybe think sultans of swing). I think a pickup that offers good sustain is also something he would want.

Bearing all the BS in mind, is there any rec's that you guys might have for him? Also worth noting the body isn't routed yet so there's still a chance to change the layout.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

Are you sure he's after OOP. Most times people have this they can't get rid of it quickly enough.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

I recommend the antiquity surfer strat for neck and middle with a pearly gates bridge and a 24 3/4 inch neck. The surfers seriously have too much tone. Phenomenal single coils.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

I would go DM Chopper Rails in Bridge ( warm but not as break-up as SD ) Chopper is great in Ash

Re: Single Coil Rec's

The YJMs are great single coils for clean and overdriven tones. So are the Classic Stacks and if you want to go pure single coil, I agree with the Antiquity Surfers. For the bridge, he might look at the Cool Rails, or the Little 59 for humbucker tones that are still pretty clear.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

So as an update, he is thinking about getting a warmoth PRS clone. So he's now open to any combination. I was thinking a humbucker or P90 bridge, a P90 middle and a single coil neck. The P90 middle tone is one I'd like to give him, probably a hot neck P90 or a low wound bridge. For the bridge, a Super Distortion single would be the single coil option for the Jerry Garcia tone (he's a bit of a deadhead). If he wants a humbucker, I think a WLH bridge would be a good choice. Then the antiquity surfer for the neck.

My only concern is that the neck pickup have enough output to match the bridge and middle. Would that be a problem? Also, what are some good, reasonably priced P90's? I'd say 100$ cap.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

So at this point, he's decided that he's leaning to a strat with HH routing. Wishy washy but I think this is best for him. I recommended a Prails bridge and a Revel Cynic in the neck. The Cynic is an A4 PAF, approximately in between the SNS, WLH and Pearly Gates. It's a good price and the guy will custom wind it for him so he's going to go with that.

For the bridge, I'm a little concerned that the P-Rails will be too hot to match a slightly hotter than PAF neck humbucker. If that's the case, would a magnet swap to an A2 (or UOA5 or Roughcast A5) help to tame the output?

Also, I would like to wire it as having: P90, Rail single, Prail humbucker, Bridge and neck humbuckers in parallel, bridge single (preferably either coil available) and neck humbucker in parallel, bridge humbucker and neck single (only one needed) in parallel, and bridge single (again choice is preferred) and neck single parallel. I'm going to try to sketch up a wiring diagram that would work for this. I think I have a working idea, I'll sketch it up and upload it for you all.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

I don't think you have to worry about a bridge humbucker overpowering a neck humbucker. I had a hot humbucker with a vintage single coil and they still balanced. All I did was put the single coil a little closer to the strings than the hb and everything sounded fine.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

The p-rail in series will indeed be very hot....but in parallel its pretty close to a PAF type humbucker tone.
And no, magnets will not help to tame the output unless the swap is a doublethick ceramic to an A3 or similar.

Re: Single Coil Rec's

I never use p-rails bridge in series for clean or crunch. In fact for crunch I live on P90. Using triple shots it is easy to move a single switch to get series hunbucker for just a bit more oomph. If I have a decent amount of gain, the darkening of the tone is less audible to me at least.
