Single coil to pair with Pegasus & Sentient in HSH?

I've got an old Ibanez S470 that I've upgraded with a Pegasus trembucker and a Sentient neck humbucker. Those pickups sound great on their own, but I'm really not feeling the stock single coil when used either in combination or by itself. I mainly play newer progressive metal, but also some older alternative rock like pearl jam, sound garden, etc. Either way, I prefer some modern sounding versatility.

I think I've narrowed it down to these SD offerings that seem to sound articulate enough on the website, but I'm not sure of how the volume/tone will match with the Pegasus/Sentient.

Cool Rails (neck or bridge?)
Duckbucker (neck or bridge?)
SSL-3
SSL-5

Can anyone offer any opinions on whether these seem like good or bad pairings as the "single coil"? The first two are humbuckers sized as a single coil... so I'm not sure how to wire that.

Welcome to the forum!

What pickup to choose really depends on what you want the single coil to do, that it isn't currently doing. The Cool Rails actually sounds a lot like the Jazz humbucker, while the Duckbucker is sort of a quiet (no hum) idealized single coil. The SSL-5 & -3 are sort of hot, warmer single coils, that don't sound at all like humbuckers, nor like traditional Strat pickups. So tonally, the choices are all over the place...so let's try to refine them.

I think I've narrowed it down to the cool rails after watching a bunch of videos. The only question I have is whether the neck version will have enough output to keep up with the Pegasus & Sentient? Will I need to adjust the height drastically? Or what should I do to even it all out?

Nope, all three of the pickups going in your Ibby are moderate output. You should have no issues adjusting the height for both tone and volume.

The Cool Rails is sort of the single coil sized version of a Jazz, so I can see that being a good choice. Either neck or bridge model, really- just balance it with height.
