Singlecoil/Mini-Humbucker for mathrock

Hey, all! I play a style in the vein of prog-rock/math-rock. I’m partial to the sound of mini-humbucker bridge pickups and singlecoil neck pickups, particularly tele-style pickups. I play with a very pristine clean tone, generally. Can anyone recommend a good combo?

Hey I'm a mini and math fanatic but could use some clarification on your math rock interests.

from my perspective minis singles and single sized humbuckers are absolutely wonderful for the side of math rock where progressive meets jazz with everything from clean to crunch tones..

On the other hand Im not a metal guy..
but some of my customers are more interested in the metal tones that are possible with math Rock.from my perspective metal tones tend to do much better with full-sized humbuckers.

Can you give me some examples of the songs you like? Also what kind of guitars do you like to play? long scale or short scale? Same question about amplification?

I’m not much of a metal guy, myself. Occasionally I’ll venture into the more progressive rock with a bit of a crunch tone. Though nothing really high gain. I much prefer a nice clean tone. I enjoy some Chon and Polyphia as well as Covet. TTNG is probably my most favourite however. That and Icarus The Owl.

Regarding equipment; I have weird amalgamations of instruments. I used a couple Warmoth builds. Stratocaster bodies with Telecaster necks, all 25.5in scale, hardtail bridges, single volume/tone controls. All in open tunings. These are my preferred guitars. Right now they’re all equipped with a Pegasus bridge pickup and an STK-4B in the neck. While I like this combination, I feel that the mini-humbucker better suits my needs and I absolutely adore the clean tone of a Telecaster Neck Pickup.

My main amplifier is a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I will occasionally use a Vox AC30. But the Deluxe has a nice roundness that I prefer.

Hey, sorry to take so long to get back...

For the neck I would go with a mini sized firebird... Tighter and a tadbrighter than a regular mini... Check out structure... They are a different pup design and don't go with Gibson... Had great success with dealing and lollar and I hear the SD fb is also good.

Sounds like you have a tele bridge? Good combo with firebird neck.

However, I would go with standard mini for math rock and I'm ok with Gibson's take on a regular mini...

Interested in hearing what u do.

Polyphia used full-size humbuckers and split them to get that single-coil tone. Now with their sigs they go Position 4 with the HSS configuration which sounds really similar. I'd recommend splitting the Pegasus and running it parallel with the Classic Stack and see if that gets close. For the record I've split a Jazz and Screamin' Demon together and it sounds basically identical to the tone for G.O.A.T.

Yeah, i know what they’ve been doing with theirs. I’m not trying to get their tone in anyway. The setup I have now seems okay. I just feel that the mini bridge and Tele neck might serve me better

Ideally I’d want a Tele neck pickup and a minihumbucker bridge.
