Singles to match JB in bridge?

Hey all!

I just picked up a JB off the net. I've got a SSH pickguard to mount it in, so I need suggestions on pups to match. Gotta match that output...

I'm considering...
QP's
A2 pros
Hot strat

BTW, I play pretty much hard rock stuff ala 80's metal (Dokken, etc.) Pups are going into an ASH strat, to be played through POD 2.0 or Marshall DSL.

Thanks! :)

Maybe the QP's...I dunno. I've not found a Strat style single coil that can match the output of a fullsized JB. Lew

Lil 59 neck and middle

Hmm...interesting choice.

You know, I've been considering that maybe I should try a different combo altogether. I've heard great things about the CC and the '59 bridge pickup. I'd like the strat to be kinna a workhorse...versatility is key here. Plus, I think that the '59b would at least blend better with the singles, as compared to the JB. What do y'all think?

To be honest, I'm kind of jones'in to try the CC...I'm not crazy about my PGn pickup and I've heard from some friends that it's pretty similar to the '59 series. Plus I've heard that the CC sounds great in strats. I haven't heard them for myself though.

Any input is appreciated guys. Thanks a million :)

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

I agree with Brisk. Normally, I don't go for Lil JB's, Lil 59's, or hotrails, but I've bought guitars that had those already installed, and love'd em. Of course, if you're looking for a traditional strat sound, you won't find it with those, but for silky humbucker neck lead tones, I like all of those. I have a JB/SSL-1/Hotrails in a G&L Invader, and really like that combo. The single coil middle makes the notch position sounds much more stratlike. Then, the hotrails neck balances with the JB in the same way a fullsize 59 would. Try a hotrails! Lil 59's would be a great option too.

Dude, if you're gonna rock it old school, a la Lynch, try an SSL-1. Personally, I would use the JB Jr.

JB junior for the neck you mean?

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

I'm curious about who's actually tried both the lil 59 neck and JB Jr. neck.
Anyone? I'm going to put one of these two in the neck position of my guardless G&L Legacy Deluxe, and am wondering which one has a better solo tone with gain?

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

For what its worth, I had a JB matched with my QP's before the C5 went in there. The QP's definitely overpowered the JB. It wasn't a good match.

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

yeah I had the same Q i have a JB in the bridge and wanna adda single coil in the neck but dont know a what to go in for. I am considering cool rails or aps flat.

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

Has anyone ever tried finding the highest output singles by using a bridge single instead of a neck, like a Twangbanger or Antiquity Custom? I'm just worried about phase/polarity problems, but other than that, it sounds like a good idea.....to get the single neck to be hot enough to mate with a humbucker in the bridge.

One of my Waynes has a a JB Jr in the middle as well as the neck, and a JB in the brigge. It sounds amazing!!

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

I use the SSL-1 in the mid position with a JB in bridge. The notch position is great.

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

Well, I just had your dilema, and my solution was Cool rails and Hot Rails.
I put the cool rails in the neck, and hot rails in the middle.
I Have three push/pull pots, so I can split the cool rails and JB, and I built in a working
"tube screamer" like preamp to be turned on and off with the third pot. I love the tone of the cool rails for some nice cleans, and with the right settings, some quack. The hot rails is okay on its own, but it realls shines when combined with the bridge. This gives a killer lead tone.

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

so u wld say that the cool rails wld be a better choice than the aps 2 flat? i wld like something thats warm but clear.

Re: Singles to match JB in bridge?

I've never experimented with the APS2 flat, but I LOVE my cool rails. Great pickup, and it can match the output of the JB pretty well.
