Six of Eddie Van Halen's stage-played guitars go up for auction

If you guys want to chip in, my birthday is coming up.

Six Charvel EVH Art Series electric guitars – which have all been stage-played and signed by Eddie Van Halen – have gone up for auction as part of one mammoth collection.

The sextet of six-strings are also accompanied by a Chip Ellis-built Fender Custom Shop Frankenstein copy – dubbed "Frankie 2" – which will be included in Analogr’s monster Van Halen offering.

We’ve seen our fair share of Charvel Art Series auctions over the years, though none quite as extensive as this. In this case, all seven guitars are being auctioned as one lot, with a minimum reserve price of $525,000.

If you miss the auction, there's 5 more at The Music Zoo for $85k each (Washington DC is $100k, for some reason).

I don't know if EVH's stage guitars were precious to him. I think he got a delivery every week and didn't care what he grabbed before the start of a set of shows. But if they can get that kind of money now, you bet they will. And there are many players who would pay that much, too.

They look like they were painted and signed with later resale in mind. It looks as if Charvel sent EVH guitars for different legs of the tour, note the cities pre-painted on the axes. Ed played the guitar for a few songs, they took a picture, signed the guitar, and put it back in the vault until now. No matter their intentions they are stage-played EVH guitars, with unique graphics and very cool. Yet, I do not feel they are worth the money they are fetching if there are so many of them out there.

It's silly, I know the game -its dishonest to the buyer

I don't doubt that. Just EVH investing in his family's future.

Exactly, thats the game, if they have EVH play as many guitars as possible that are just barely used more than an autographed guitar at NAMM.

It's a modern disingenuous industry, the guitar was not special, loved or cared about by the artist -but thats what they are counting on the buyer to perceive to inflate the value.

It would be like a company laying out 100 soccer balls for Messi to kick once and selling them.

One detail that I don't know if it matters, I seem to recall for the Art Series, Charvel sent him 1-color bodies and Ed taped them up in the design he wanted and spec'd the colors, sent them back to Charvel and they painted the second color. So he did have a hand in the design FWIW.
