sjag-1 vintage for fender jaguar/squeal problem/claw

hiya,

i recently purchased the sjag-1 as a replacement for the original pickups for my made in japan fender jaguar, for the original pickups squealed too early.

well, the seymour duncans squeal also, but i can't tell if they start to squeal at the same volume.

now i suspect the "claws" which are the metal pieces outside of the plastic housing of the pickup, for they make a ringing high pitched sound if i tap on them.
when installing the pickups i watched closely, that the holes on the underside of the claws don't touch the polepieces.

how could i avoid the squealing? remove the claws? aren't they used for shielding the coils?

any ideas greatly appreciated! i reached the end of mine.:crying:
anyone?:sigh:
cheers,
dual

edit: typos... ;)

Hey guy and welcome to the forum if you haven't been welcomed yet...
I actually have no idea, but have you tried putting something soft between the claws and the place where they hold?

Yes, I agree that you have no idea... Why do you post then! :yell:

OK - then to answer the comment. There is the pup-cover between the pup and claw. (Plastic is soft...)

The Claw is grounded! (To the Pup)

Did you replace the foam rubber under the pup?

---

I have the SJAG-1 installed on one of my Jaguars and it does not buzz at all.

I also change the bridge to Graftech style and use heat shrink around the bridge posts to take up the slack. Finally, I also use a BuzzStop to get more tension on the strings.

:smack: i just lost my whole posting due to a wrong click... darn

2nd attempt:
i have the foam still under the pickup.
furthermore i put two springs from two ballpens under the pickup, so that the screws holding the pickup in place go through the spring before going into the guitars body. that way the pickups are pushed up by the force of the spring and kept in place much tighter than with the foam alone.
could that be the problem?
i will take out the springs and see what happens. maybe they cause the tendency to resonation.

the problem is not so much a buzzing sound (like the one you get with an improperly grounded guitar) but rather a high pitched squeal which appears at moderate volume when i stand 2 meters in front of my 4x12 and turn on the proco turbo rat with distortion set at 3 o'clock. tapping on the claw provokes this squeal.
furthermore holding my hand forming a cup in a certain angle provokes the squeal also. (similar to getting a feedback with a microphone on stage, using wrongly adjusted wedges)

sidenote:
i already planned on buying a schaller bridge (build for tremolo guitars) and a buzz stop to get more tension i.e. more sustain, like you said.

thanks for your advice!
cheers:bigthumb:

Re: sjag-1 vintage for fender jaguar/squeal problem/claw

right,

the problem was the claws. even knocking on the body could provoke at least the beginning of the high pitched sound.

i took the claws off and now i can play at high volume without the squeal.
the only thing i noticed was the high interference noise (buzz) getting stronger or weaker, depending on how my standing position is. pretty normal for single coils, as i understood it.
interesting enough the noise goes away when switching both pickups on. (humbucking effect?)

well i wrapped the coil of the neck pickup in copperfoil, but no luck there. at least not a real improvement i could notice.

i suspect the coils are not the source of interference getting into the circuit.
maybe i should check the unshielded parts of the circuit.

after succeeding in my hunt for inexpensive mu-metal (dont know the word for it in english; but going to edit this post when/if i find out. EDIT: found out; its "permalloy") i think i'll shield the control cavities with this metal. maybe i'll try to make small 'boxes' for each of the circuit parts.

what do you think?
cheers,
dual

I think there's a good reason that Seth Lover invented the humbucker!!!
