Slanted humbucker blues...please help, oh, wise ones

OK, long story short, I recently acquired a couple BC Rich Gunslingers:

I like the colors. My girlfriend likes the colors, too. In fact, she gets hot & bothered watching me play 'em on stage. I'd like to continue this phenomena.

The guitars feel good and play great. All is good, right? No, not really. I don't like the tone of either. Both are really bassy/mushy on the low strings, no doubt a result of the forward slant of the pickup under those strings. The tone of the high strings is fine. (The tone of all the strings when unamplified is fine.)

The yellow one has a Dimarzio Super Distortion (SD). The green has a Rockfield Mafia, which sounds pretty similar, so I'm guessing it was modeled after a SD. Knowing the SD is a bass heavy pickup in the first place, putting it into a slanted pickup slot was not a great choice, IMO. FYI, I have a SD in another similar guitar (non-slanted bridge position), and I think it sounds fine there, so I'm sure it's the slant that's causing my problem.

So, I need a pickup with considerablely more clarity on the low strings. It's not quite as simple as throwing a really bright pickup in there, because I don't want to put the high strings into ice pick territory...the high strings sound fine now, it's just the bass strings that need to be cleaned up.

What pickup(s) do you recommend that might give me the clarity on the low end I am seeking? Are there any pickups that are known for working particularily well in a slanted position?

Some I have been contemplating:

1. JB - they were put in a million Barettas, and folks seemed to like them, BUT I seem to recall them being a little loose in the low end, too
2. Distortion and Custom Custom - neither have too much low end, according to Duncan's tone chart
3. FRED - Lighter on the bass than SD according to Dimarzio's chart
4. Super 2 - much brighter than SD...perhaps too bright?

Output wise, I'm fine with anything from a 59 up tp JB/SD levels. I don't want actives. Some other potential considerations:

1. I play through

Randall RM4 pre-amp
VHT 2/50/2 power amp
412 cab with V30's

2. I play with moderate amounts of gain, mostly Marshall type tones, not Mesa types.

3. Both guitars are tuned a whole step down, which I know is not helping.

4. I play a number of other guitars live through my rig, so I would prefer not to make wholesale changes to my EQ settings to accomodate these two guitars.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Believe it or not, I'm usually a lot more long winded than this.

Try lowering the bass side of the pup into the body cavity, and raise the pole pieces accordingly. This will brighten up the bass strings while keeping the treble string beefy.

I just grabbed this from the B C Rich website. It might help clarify a few issues.

Rockfield Pickups - Mafia Bridge Pickups
BC Rich guitars called and asked us, “We like the turbo series but can you do them with a ceramic magnet also?” ... The use of a ceramic magnet gives any pickup extra power due to the increased magnetic field that they provide. This feature makes the mafia pickups produce a hotter and thicker tone that’s really aggressive and full. The increased low end and thick mids and in your face highs is what rock and roll was built on! Balanced and full of sustain this pickup is a great representation of its namesake, a truly intimidating killer.

Consider changing the magnet.

Consider changing the magnet.

A good place to start is an A5. If that turns out to be too bright or not enough mids, try either an A8 or an Unoriented A5. Blueman swears by this to fill in some mids and round out the highs as compared to the A5. I just got my UnA5's yesterday but haven't had a chance to try them myself yet.

Many other choices of mags to swap in to fine tune your sound.

Is there a tutorial somewhere which explains step by step how to change a magnet for noobs such as myself?

Yes, i have utilized the Search function, and while finding lots of good reading, I have yet to find a step by step walk through the process.

Thanks,
Gary

Look up project guitar on a search engine. Best tutorial on the subject that I have seen.

I have to say...I find it hard to believe that you can't get a good sound out of the SuperD. I think some height/pole adjustments will work for you just fine. At least with the SuperD.

A distortion will work great - but might have too much highs. Given the amp, I'd say go for a medium output bucker:
Pearly Gates - all the highs you need but the sweet top end of an A2 magnet. Blues, rock, metal, whatever you need with that Randall.

If you just can't get that SD to sound the way you want with mag swaps and height adjustments, then you certainly need to consider the Pearly Gates.

I would really love to hear one of these with a Duncan Distortion on,especially since we are talking about tuning a whole step down. You might need to try it with a 250k volume pot too,if you feel it is more grinding than expected. But i think one of these in D and a DD will be a great combination
