Slanted Or Strait?

I know a lot of half stack users use slanted cabs, is there actually any advantage to using one?
I ask because there is a strait Marshall 1960 cab going real cheap near me.
I recently bought a Laney AOR head () and have been running it through PA speakers! Haha.
Cheers.

Re: Slanted Or Strait?

Straight cabs supposedly have a bigger low end than slant cabs, because of their slightly larger volume and more resonant rectangular shape.

Slant cabs look cool.

I'm stuck in this quandry right now - I'm planning to build an 18 Watt 1/4 stack and really want the look of a slant-front vertical 2x12 cab. I just KNOW a straight-front cab will sound better, but I can't get over the at "looks cool" part.

I know, they look cooler :(.
You have to pay about another £100 over here for a slanted cab, even though there is more of them.
But if strait ones sound better, i don't really care about looks.
When you say a bigger bottom end, they won't sound muddy as a single cab will they?

Re: Slanted Or Strait?

Straight is the better sounding cab in most situations. I think you should go for the cab.

Re: Slanted Or Strait?

slanted has one speaker pointed up to your ears if you're standing somewhat close to it. that's what of the reasons I have one.

But both are good!

Screw that, get a straight front, crank the ***** & let it blow some skirts up

Re: Slanted Or Strait?

I have both. I prefer my Slant cab for 2 reasons. I feel it's better built than my straight cab. It has a much tight response. Secondly if I'm ever stuck standing close to the cab I can hear myself better with a speaker slightly angled towards my ear.

Re: Slanted Or Strait?

To my ears there is an element of "tightness" you get with a straight cab that you just don't get with a slant. As others have mentioned if you get stuck close to the cab it can be hard to hear yourself.

Also in a band context the differnce is less audible but, little things like this can make or break your tone, regardless of it's directly audible in the context of a band.
