Slanted vs Flat Mounting Rings for Humbuckers

With regard to slanted mounting rings.

What is the difference in having one coil of the humbucker further away from the strings?

I always thought the purpose of slanted mounting rings was to align the pup with the neck/bridge angle of some guitars. Like LP's, I think. That way both pup coils will be the same distance from the strings. But, I'm not positive about that.

+1 To add to this, there are different height slanted rings, I did not realize this when I bought some. I figured LP Bridge was common and LP neck was common, but apparently not. (These were not Gibson parts, they were one of the knock-off brands, I think AllParts)
