Slash Alnico Pro 2's vs. Pearly Gates vs. SH-1 59's

If you could only pick out of these 3 sets of pickups which set would you pick for that old school late 60's early 70's blues rock tone. Which one do you guys think gets the closest to hitting the nail on the head?

I have a set of slash's that i love but there is just something about them that i guess you could say sounds "modern" ive been using them for a few years now and for all intensive purposes i like them, but i had a chance to pick up a spare set of slash's and traded them for a set of pearly gates which i liked even better but there was still something that wasn't right. So i just traded off the pearly gates set for a neck and bridge sh-1 59' set. Im wondering if you guys think this would get me closer to that tone than the other 2 sets or if i just made a huge mistake in trading off the pearly gates.

Once money allows me (i just lost my job last week) i plan on buying a set of antiquities as soon as i get the money, i know for a fact that they will totally hit the nail on the head for me. Ive heard them in person a few times and i just love the tones people get with them. How much different are the 59's from the antiquities?

I realize im new but i hope i can pick your guy's brains over this stuff i know this is the best place to be if i have any pickup questions. thanks in advance

Oh and just for the record my guitar is a 2006 gibson standard, it has CTS 500k pots all around, wired 50's style, switchcraft jack and switch and a bone nut. I have a few amps, i mainly use my VOX AC4TV as i can get a great tone and not have to replace my bedroom windows once im finished, i also have a 1964 Magnatone Tonemaster (yes like the one phil x plays on in the FA vids) but its more for gigs and stuff or when the wife and baby arnt around ;) It was given to me by my father.

thanks guys!

59's are fine sounding pups

they are not antiquities and sound pretty different. the different magnets have a lot to do with it but theres something that the antiquities have that few other pups have.

i love my pearly gates too but the ants just nail the old school alnico II paf tone

Of the 3 listed I like the Pearly Gates the most. I agree with G0lden's post....Seths are the ticket.

Re: Slash Alnico Pro 2's vs. Pearly Gates vs. SH-1 59's

did u like them? what about the slashs or pearlys? Im just trying to see out of the 3 i have tested or own which i the best or the one i might be hapiest with i realize there are probably better options but i just dont have any money right now.

the seths are great too. i forgot to mention them. i still like the antiquitys better but the seths are great. i have a set of pearlys, some seths, some ants and even a 59n floating around. they are all great pups but run a good part of the paf type spectrum

All good choices and good suggestions brought forth so far. Due to your circumstances right now, if you are a d0-it-yourself'er, a magnet swap in the mentioned pickups can help get you to where you want to be. Personally, I like roughcast A2 magnets in the 59's. Or, an unoriented A5 in the bridge and a A2 in the neck (some may disagree). Or, you might like a Pearly gates bridge with a 59 neck. I've never tried the Pearly Gates neck, but a lot of people swear by them. The genre you describe DOES have some variation, and the various pickups mentioned will get you to some point within that spectrum.

If you have questions about what the different magnets do and how to swap them, search this forum -- it is a FANTASTIC resource. Mags generally cost $4-8 each when buying small quantities. Check out AddictionFX, either on ebay or directly on their website.

I've met Peter Green and John Mayall after a concert in Detroit about 10-11 years ago. I didn't talk to either of them for very long, although both signed pickguards for me.

If you flipped the mag, then you know how to change the mag. That's a good start! Given that you already have the 59's and a couple A2 mags, I'd just start experimenting...

Personally, I'd do it this order:
1. Stock 59's, as is.
2. Swap neck mag to A2
3. Swap bridge mag to A2. So far, nothing has cost you a penny...
4. Acquire a few additional mags, like UOA5 and A4
Stop at any point you are satisfied.

His voice was pretty quiet and he really didn't say much, but he was really cool and very friendly. I don't think he cared much for all the Fleetwood Mac love(he is obviously more interested in what he's doing now), but he was very gracious about it. I didn't think he was crazy in the least -- maybe a little at loss for words at times. I think his meds are really good now. I think we're just lucky to still have him around.
