Slash model PSA

after having used it at around 1/8” from the strings forever, I backed it off today. The horrible compression disappeared and the sound became much more PAF like. I thought to myself, these pickups don’t like being too close to the strings.

I think maybe they’re designed that way...

Re: Slash model PSA

I constantly adjust height on all my pickups. I have that red Ibanez screwdriver set next to my Kemper that I use all the time. I find even for different songs I like different heights, especially with my PGn. I imagine the Slash is no different.

Re: Slash model PSA

Yeah, pickup height makes a big difference. Did it come that way?

No, I just defaulted to factory spec.. which apparently is a little too close for this to sound open and chime

Yeah, some pickups are more sensitive to height than others. The most finicky pickups I have are Ibanez V6 pups. Too close and they're bright as f***! Too far away and they're ok, but mostly...meh. But get 'em in that sweet spot and they get a nice gnarly mid-range grind that rivals the Duncan Customs I have in a couple other guitars.

Of course, I'm still going to eventually replace them with a Custom and probably a PGb in the neck. ;)

Re: Slash model PSA

Everyone has different wants. And all pickups's tone is reliant on gap to the strings.

Re: Slash model PSA

I find pickup height adjustment very important indeed. Some really do seem more sensitive to it than others. I have the Slash set in a Mockingbird which I haven't checked since I bought it last year. Surprising that that got past me; usually it's one of the first things I address when I get a guitar. I should take a look and maybe tweak them a bit.

Thanks for the heads up.
