Sliding Pickup Guitar

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

Meh... various iterations of that idea have been around since the 70's

I doubt very much at all that his version of it will take off. When you are soloing and you want to just flip to the neck pickup for a short run then flip back to the bridge what are you suppose to do? When i want the sound of pickups combined what am I suppose to do?

It really solves a non problem. ive never heard a playing going... awww man if only my bridge pickup was 3/8ths of an inch closer to the neck then my tone would be right where I want it.

Unless he comes up with a way that I can "program" preset positions cause no way in hell am i going to be on stage trying to work it r back and forth and find that magic spot. The swaps would also have to be instantaneous or atleast as fast as they are now. Even if i only swap pups between songs it still takes too long to turn the dial and find the right spot.

I dunno maybe they would sell a few to tweakers and studio players. But i dont see them selling on anything of a wide scale.

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

Yeah, what pup does neck and bridge and inbetween ?
now that is exactly why I posted it in the pickup forum.

I think there are always positives when you cross paths with these tidbits.

I'm fairly certain PAF clones would excel in this.

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

Adjusting in the middle of playing doesn't seem like such a selling point to me either. I've been thinking about this idea for many years and I always saw it as something I would use to tweak the exact position of each pickup to get it right where I want it and leave it there, not something I would adjust on the fly at a gig. Most people don't know but very slight tweaks in the distance between the bridge and the bridge pickup -- I'm talking 1/16" or even less -- make a HUGE difference in tone, and that's where I think such a device would find its niche. Less so on the neck but it would make a difference there too.

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

Interesting, but it's going to take a miracle to get the average player excited about it. Kind of ugly with a big hole in the middle of your guitar. You could store a sandwich in there for breaks during gigs! It's more wood removed than I'd want. What about guys who like HSS and HSH guitars? How do you get an HB and single coil both on rails? If you're sliding a PU back and forth regularly, eventually a wire's going to come loose or get tangled.

As a PAF fan, I don't see the appeal in it, as I want a hotter PU in the bridge for warmth, and an underwound one in the neck for clarity and definition. Likewise, I wouldn't want a 14K Custom variant slid down to the neck slot. I like having two different PU's in a guitar, each dialed in for their location.

A possible issue is how the PU sits under string nodes. That would change depending on where you slid the PU. I don't think a HB in the middle has nearly as good a tone as it does in the bridge or neck slots.

Fascinating Rick.

Exactly how much hotter do you like your bridge pickups than you neck pickups.

And tell me all about your experiences with a Custom. Or a Distortion, Or Superdistortion, or JB in the neck. What didn't you like about those.

Having put a JB in the neck, and a Superdistortion, I think those are FANTASTIC tones!

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

It is an interesting novelty item for the tone explorers. Otherwise meh.

Re: Sliding Pickup Guitar

Seems like a poor execution of what already exists. I can't fault the guy for trying. To me it seems like it causes problems and tries to solve one that doesn't exist. If it were me, I would work on a pickup mounting system that tilts on an axis. So you could go from say a normal Strat bridge pickup angle to a reverse angle. Even that doesn't seem really useful IMO.
