SM-3s and Firebird mini HBs in general

Recently rediscovered a SM-3 (Seymourized Mini HB) bridge pickup (the neck is somewhere yet to be rediscovered as well) which had been slated for a project guitar which never really went anywhere many years ago.

The info on the site recommended mahogany/swamp ash bodies and rosewood fingerboards. Aside from doing the boring thing and swapping them into my Firebird I was hoping to get some more interesting ideas from people who own or have built anything with mini-hums in them.

Not sure if this is the right forum but I think it might be since even though it's about building a guitar it's building one around a pickup (or two if I find the other one).

I have a SM-1 in the neck of my ash Tele and one in the neck of a hollow Alleykat. They're great for jazz, country, rock, and pretty much anything else. Personally, I'd build a nice strat around those SM-3's.

Right after I made this thread I saw another post you did which said about the same thing. Thanks for the response. A strat's an idea but couldn't come up with one I liked in kisakae, am refinishing a strat now and if possible I don't want to use a pickguard.

Looks like in the spirit of the original project I just may order a routed swamp ash blank from Warmoth and go from there or maybe custom order something pointy. That Macross/Robotech avatar gave me some ideas on a possible finish for that or some other project.

I have an SM-2 bridge in a swamp ash tele thinline with one piece maple neck. It's great for lead tones, slide work and rhythm too. I love this pickup in this guitar.

Also have an SM-2 neck in a Strat. It's interesting and I like it quite a bit, but I think I'm going to end up with a p90 or phat cat in that slot.

Cool idea, bro. Swamp ash really seems to work well with mini's. Let us know what you decide. :burnout:
