Sm 57 - Basic Recording Microphone?

I'm ready to start micing my amps. I've heard from several people that an SM 57 is an industry standard, great for miking all kinds of things. They are also relatively inexpensive and available on the used market.

Any others I should consider?

Sweet. I figured so. There's a used on my local craigslist for $75. Seems like a pretty good deal compared to eBay prices.

I read somewhere last week that Bono only uses a 57 or 58 in the studio to track his vocals...they sound good to me.

The word is, sure you can find better sounding microphones out there, but none provide the reliability, and pure bang for the buck like a SM57.

Yep, if you can work a 57 you'll be quite golden in a lot of scenarios.

He sometimes uses a 58...

Plugged into a $15,000 recording chain though.

You can get new SM57s for $90 if you look around.

I also think there's a rebate being offered at the moment.

Yeh the SM57 will get it done, you might also want to consider Sennheiser E609 I heard some good A/B demos of those two. I kinda prefer the E609,but I always tend to lean outside the circle. For the price and home recording guitar I think those are the only 2 to consider.

Are there other decent instruments mics for around $100? Peavey? AKG? I wanna know too

  • The Audix i5 is another one, but usually more for snare than gtr... It's definitely scooped.
  • Also, maybe an offering for E/V? I haven't tried any E/V's though.

Just trying to think of some ideas.

You can get all the recording that you need done with a 57. They're a workhorse and can make magic. They require placement and planning, but they're more than adequate and as you've been reading, they're the industry standard.

Plus you can use one as a hammer in a pinch and it will still work fine.
