SM 57 OR i5 ?

Hey everyone,

I am getting ready to buy a couple of mics to mic my guitar cab (for recording). I had always by default figured on an sm 57 as being one. A guy recommended an Audix i5 instead. What are your opinions on this?

He also recommeded a Senheieser MD 421 for the other mic.

Would these two mics be a good place to start? Any suggestions would be helpful as these are uncharted waters for me.

Muchy Grassy ass.

Scott

Any info on the reasons behind your opinions would help as well...I need to learn the "whys" as much as the "whats".

What kind of music are you playing, and what kind of cab is it? Also, is it a live environment, or strictly recording?

If it's for studio recording, I always try to pair a Dynamic Mic (such as an SM57 or a 421) with a Condensor mic (such as a Rode NT1/2, Blue Baby Bottle or AKG 414) for different results.

SM57 is a classic and works in sooooooooooo many situations. Other mics offer a lot of great things and there a are a lot of good ways to record a guitar, but an SM57 is something you should own and get to know.

Sorry about the lack of details....

Right now its a Vox Valvetronix single 12" combo, I play mostly heavy distorted but not nu-metal. Strictly recording, no live situations. I want to start with some decent mics that I can grow into and not grow out of.

I was also thinking of the Rode NT1 in addition to the 57 or i5 based strictly on things I've read. $500.00 for mics is what I've budgeted for.

I guess it would be good to have a dynamic and a condensor wouldn't it?
