smelly mold in guitar case

So I just bought a new to me Gibson SG and when it got here the case stinks so bad I couldn't even bring it in the house. I believe its mold. I propped the case open, vacuumed it out and then started rubbing baking soda into everything. Its sitting outside in the sun now. I'm afraid that with it being mold the smell will keep coming back whenever the case is left closed for any amount of time. what else can I try that will permanently get rid of the smell so I don't have to worry about it coming back? I thought about filling some tea bags with coffee grounds to keep in there. Any better Ideas? Thanks.

I hope someone has a solution for this. I have an acoustic case with the same problem. And it injected the smell into the guitar itself.

What have you tried? Luckily mine is a solid body and the smell on it went away after a day or so.

Just setting it out in the Florida sun. Knocked it down significantly, but there's still some remnants there. Enough to be annoying.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

Well, if it is indeed mold, I'd toss it. That stuff is dangerous to have around.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

I don't think mine is mold. Maybe mildew. It was stored in a damp Ohio basement for a long time. We never had mold there.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

I tried a good brand of cat litter in the guitar case, turned it over and shook it up every day for a week, then vacuumed it out and used compressed air to blow it out. Now it smells like laundry soap, which is considerably more pleasant.

Cases aren’t that expensive. I would get rid of it. It’s an opportunity to get a really nice new case and be happy with it.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

Can't you smell that smell?

Yeah, toss it into the landfill in the next county, and hope that it hasn't contaminated your guitar.

All I’ve got is cycling coffee grounds through it or replacing it. Bury it in the deepest swamp you can find. Cut its head off and drive a sharp wooden stake through its heart. Bury it face-down and weigh it down with cinder blocks.

Think I'll stay on your good side.

You could soak it with this.
Don't know what it would do to the liner.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

Go medieval. Throw it in the pool. The the chlorine sanitizes it and it floats to the top, dry it out and use it. If it sinks, it wasn’t meant to be.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

My dad spilled gas in the back of his truck bed one time. The truck really started to stink, so he went online and read that coffee is strong smelling and can mask other odours. So he brewed up two pots of coffee and stuck them in the back of the truck. Then forgot about them. Then spilled both of them driving to work a couple days later. The truck smelled like gas and stale coffee for more than a decade before he finally sold it. In the dead of winter, when you couldn't smell much. :P

I vote kill the case with fire.

Re: smelly mold in guitar case

Yeah, mold isn't anything to play with, and couple that with the fact that cases are not super expensive (most of the time), it just makes sense to replace it.
