Snake Oil Strings!

Heard about how phenomenal they were so i looked into a set for my strat. Bought an original nickel ME+, .11-.48 pack. Looked around the site, theres some great articles about how strings have changed and how they've played a part in the greatest music since guitar became popular. Just tons of information.

Anyway, he knows how to make some strings! :headbang: I put em on earlier yesterday and the tone is amazing. Like night and day difference between my old Ernie Balls. Theyre bright and sweet at the same time. Have a kind of jangly sound for strumming but are still really warm and smooth for lead and whatnot. Great diversity in the tone just due to how you want them to sound, how you pick etc. Chords blend magnificently better but still have individual note clarity. Hard to describe but sounds like a guitar should.
Theyre supposed to last and keep their tone for the entire life of the string, not how most strings mellow after a few days of playtime and well its still only the second day so we'll say how it turns out.

But Is there anyone else out there thats used/is using these? What was your take?

Re: Snake Oil Strings!

when i was having an issue with the dr pure blues that ive used for years i tried a few sets od the sos strings. i really liked them alot. as much as the pure blues, except for the price. i tried both the original nickel and his nickel plated rock formula in 11-50. i prefer the original nickel but i kinda knew i would.

i also tried his acoustic 101 set and i think ill keep using his acoustic strings. really like that set alot!! better than any other set ive tried in a long time.

the big difference is i have alot of electric guitars and only one acoustic that i actually use

Re: Snake Oil Strings!

Good strings. I didn't notice a huge difference from my usuals, though.

Re: Snake Oil Strings!

Easily the best strings I've ever used in all of the main criteria...tone, feel and longevity. I use the Rock Formula. Love 'em.

Re: Snake Oil Strings!

I've gone through several sets of the "rock" set in the past; they were pretty decent (I still have a set or two over here that I've never opened). Once I started catching wind of the spotty business practices (lots of people with unfulfilled orders, excuses after excuses and false promises), I started to look elsewhere. I've switched to Dean Markley's Signature Series thanks to a well respected luthier in the area and I like them better. Snake Oil Strings do last pretty long (the DM's are just as long), but I found that if you re-tune your guitar it really weakens the Snake Oil Strings and they have a tendency to break (they are sensitive to pressure differences, as much or more than the competition like D'Addario).

All in all, these strings aren't the miracle that they were proclaimed as over at TGP (big shocker there, lol). They're jangly and better than some of the garbage out there (like GHS Boomers.... those are pretty horrible). I can't really speak about the acoustic strings (I don't think they were available when they first came out, but I could be wrong). Right now, Martin's stuff works pretty well for my limited acoustic setup (they sound better than the Elixirs I used to have on there).

I'd have a hard time judging on a fresh set of strings. Last week I decided to try a set of DR's. Never tried them before, so I ordered a set of Dime sigs 10-52 from MF. The D'adarrio's had been on for about a month. They still sounded Ok and felt alive, but I needed to do a good cleaning anyway so I slapped the DR's on.

I plugged in, tuned up, stretched, checked setup etc. and started playing. The tone was Amazing. Night and day difference. I would be extatic except for the fact when I put on the d'addarios a month earlier I had the same feeling and the time before that too.

Moral of the story is, fresh strings sound betta and I should probably change them more than once a month.

Re: Snake Oil Strings!

fresh strings make an incredible difference man. I am rocking the d'adario 10-46 right now and am looking at bumping up to the 11-48. I may try another brand as well, perhaps the coated ernie balls. just so many to try out.
