i am thinking about trying some. and was wondering what people thought of them. also where is the best place to buy them from? i went to the website but it said something about them having some trouble and being down for awhile.

Re: snake oil strings?

You gotta e-mail the guy. I've been thinking seriously about ordering some too, since Jeff swears by them (and he knows his stuff). But I have $0 right now, so I gotta hold off.

Re: snake oil strings?

I've been a SOS user for a while, it's good stuff :fing2: You can only buy them direct from the man himself AFAIK. They last longer than the average brand and the amazing thing is that they never sound dull... they sound good until the moment when they snap. In fact, some argue that they sound better the more you use them, I tend to agree.

Re: snake oil strings?

I absolutely swear by these strings. Do yourself a favor and try both the original nickel set and the rock set. They have different sounds, and you may like one set on a guitar more than the other.

For now just e-mail Dean at the address he lists on the website and he'll hook you up. I really like the fact that he'll make you just about any guage or combination of strings you want.

Great guy and fantastic strings.

Re: snake oil strings?

thanks for the info. i remember reading somewhere about him making combinations of gauges for you. thats what interested me in them. i will shoot him an email.

Re: snake oil strings?

maybe there's honesty in the name? Someone once offhandishly told me that most 90% of strings are made in the same factory.

Sounds like bull, but surely not truth to say "each string-brand really makes theirs from scratch either".

Not being a troll...

Where can I order some of these strings? I will e-mail this guy, but what's the website address?

I am always willing to try something that somebody REAL will back up as strongly as what I've read in this thread!

Nothing against my DR's, but a string that does not get dull up until it breaks is definitely a string worth paying for!!

Re: snake oil strings?

I`m tempted to them but i really don`t need super long lasting strings,i break em pretty fast anyway.

Re: snake oil strings?

I'm using the vintage set right now, they really do give a Strat that extra hendrixy twng 'n snap!

I really want to try the Rock Set tho for when I feel like riff'in power chords...

Re: snake oil strings?

Now see, I tried both the Rock set and Nickel set on my Les Paul, and they didn't do it for me at all. (The Nickel set on a Tele was pretty sweet though, but I sold that guitar.)

Anyway, I thought they felt great to the touch, and the superior build quality was obvious right out of the package. But, I detected a definite drop in my guitar's volume. The Snake Oils just weren't as loud as the Gibson Vintage Reissues I was used to.

Re: snake oil strings?

I'm real interested in these too, especially if he'll make up some sets of 10-52s.

Can I get a wound G?

I don't know who told you that, but I'm pretty sure that is entirely inaccurate. I know for a fact that D'addario makes their strings in their own factory. I also know from word of mouth that Snakeoil strings are exceptional. I hear it on several different forums, from people who actually have tried them. I also know that every brand of string sounds and feels quite different, so that would lead me to believe that the materials involved, as well as the windings being different = made somewhere else.

Re: snake oil strings?

The website is www.sobstrings.net , and I'm pretty sure he'll make you a set with a wound G Luke.

It was down last time I checked, but directed you to a temp page where you could at least e-mail Dean to order. $9 a set may seem excessive to some, but for me, as long as they last, are really a better value.

Whether or not any of you feel that way is up to you. I do like the fact that almost whatever guage you want, he'll make for no extra charge. That has to be worth something, especially if you want an 11, 14, 16, 32, 42, 54 set like some of you freaks.

Re: snake oil strings?

I ordered a couple of Rock sets (10-46) on Monday and sent the cash via PayPal. So far my payment hasn't been received and I've not heard anything from him, how long does it take to get an order filled?

Cheers,

CJ

Re: snake oil strings?

CJ, it's been almost a year since I order strings. I think sometimes Dean gets a little swamped. Also, I know the server for his website was down for sometime, so he may just be behind in getting orders filled and confirmations out due to that fiasco. I checked last night, and the website seemed to be back up and functioning as usual.

IIRC it took about 10 days for me to get my last order. Just shoot him an e-mail and ask him about it. I've never had any problems with the guy, so I'm sure it's fine.

Re: snake oil strings?

SOB are great try the medium gauge originals for single coil pups or the medium rock strings for humbuckers.
