Re: snake oil strings?
I got my sets of SOB Rock Formula strings last week (10-46). I must say, they feel great and are very quit in regards to string noise (rattles, clanks, pings). However, they don't seem to have enough punch and brightness for the kind of Metal I like to play (Maiden, Slayer, Morbid Angel).
They also seemed to go out of tune after a few minutes of playing, even though they had been thoroughly stretched. After a few days I came to the conclusion that they just don't work for me. I tried some GHS Boomers (haven't played them for years) and I was much happier with the tone. Maybe I'm just used to the sound of steel strings.
Anyway, I think SOB strings would be great for Jazz, Blues or anything with mild overdrive, but they just don't seem to cut it for Metal, IMO.
Cheers,
CJ
