So, am I just plain Weird????

Sigh. As you good people may have gathered, I have G.A.S. But a rather odd strain of the disease. Specifically, I have a desire for a tone that is mostly inspired by, er, a certain 90's band from Manchester who shall remain nameless. Since I don't have the ability or room to get my JCM900 half stack (Or Orange head through Marshall cab), that articular nirvana ain't gonna happen any time soon. Fair enough, if you ask me.

HOWEVER....

I've Tried out a number of amps and pedals - most recently, randomly blowing $120 on a line6 Crunchtone. Fine, none of these items have been all-valve items cranked to their full glory, but they have all been popular choices with the bedroom / studio crowd.

So why is it that I'm most happy with my guitar going through the Mark III Mesa/Boogie setting of my Behringer V-amp, with cab modelling on, through the CD-input of my MG15 ??!?!?!? For some reason, it's the only thing that gets me near the meaty rhythm and lead sounds I want from my 335.

Now, maybe this would all change if I played my Tele more. Maybe my 335 is just an awkward guitar. Or, maybe if I learned to play as well as the guy in the shop, all those pedals would do it for ME, too :)But it still seems odd to me.

Can anyone shed any further light on this perplexing topic?

It sounds like you are pushing through too many electronics to really get a good tone. A combination of a pedal and a tube amp is all you really need to get great tone generally. You're going from a digital processor to a solid state amp, so you're naturally going to get a very crisp crunch. Maybe the sound you're looking for isn't a warm and organic tube sound.

Have you tried Vox Valvetronix? I'd suggest giving those amps a try. They will give you crisp crunch and singing harmonics, but not completely sounding solid state.

Forgive me for dropping a few names here, but I may be able to shed some light on the subject. On Definitely Maybe, Noel was playing a Les Paul Standard with a DiMarzio PAF through a Marshall Valvestate and a WEM Dominator. Bonehead played a stock Epi Sheraton through a 50W JMP Master Volume Marshall combo.

Morning Glory is a bit more complicated. Outtakes like Acquiesce seem to be an Orange Overdrive head layered with a JCM900; probably the Les Paul again. I don't know what he used on the record itself. On the tour Noel used an Epi Sheraton through a JCM900, Bluesbreaker, and WEM. He was also rumored to have an Orange OD hidden behind his backline. Bonehead used the same JMP, sometimes accompanied by a 50W JCM800.

On Be Here Now both Noel and Bonehead totally changed their setups again. If you want me to continue with this one, let me know.

:D

Seriously?

Yes! keep going!

Wow! Where'd you get this from? Please continue, though.

Also, everyone else feel free to chip in regarding my unusual love of crappy digital modelling...

Re: So, am I just plain Weird????

I dont know man, whatever sounds good to you i'd say go with it. Unless you're a gigging musician i'd get a bigger amp, but if it sounds good i'd just keep with whatever makes you happy. It sucks that there is so much peer pressure to go out and buy top dollar tube amps that are, of course, the best way to get authentic good tone.

I myself have been gasing for a tube amp, but ya know what? I dont need it. the reality of it all is that my Cube 60 is a great amp for the bedroom, recording, and playing in live situations.
