so did i turn it into a distortion?

I put a large ceramic in the JB over the weekend and love this thing! :)
it is about as aggressive and mean as you can get without going active. and suprisingly it is not too trebly but has plenty o cut with a roaring tone
but is this the distortion model now? i never owned a distortion to compare it.

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

Not exactly, but you are in the ballpark. There is a lot more going on than just the magnet, DC resistance and resonant peak with passive humbuckers but the specs listed above are very simular between the DD and an over sized ceramic JB.

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

I believe artietoo confirmed that a DD and a JB have identical coils.

see my problem is i have never owned a real distortion so i cant compare.
i was told that if you put in the large ceramic in the JB you get a DD exact?
that the only difference is the magnet like with the three custom models?

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

I can't confirm that the JB and the DD are the same except for the magnet.

As long as your pickup is slammin, I wouldn't worry about it.

http://www5.ocn.ne.jp/~dgb/

indicates they are both using #44 rather .051 mm wire.

My digital caliper rounds off correctly (it only goes out two decimal places) when I measure #42 wire.

I was repairing a pre logo JB the other day and took a measurement while I was in there, wow .03 mm. That's smaller than the metric equivalent to #44.

Man I even replaced the batteries in my caliper and got the same reading.

So JB from Hell is the JB from Hell different from the DD or not?

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

There is something else to concider…here's a quote from Evan Skopp, "In addition to gauges, we use several types of insulation: from plain enamel to heavy formvar to polysol to poly-nylon and some other kinds."

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

I have a JB ceramic, but the magnet is from a Custom. If I stacked another ceramic from a Custom (below the baseplate) would this be in effect the same or greater than even a DD?

Someone on this forum added a Ceramic to the bottom of the baseplate of a 59 and said it gave it more balls.

I got rid of the DD prior to modding the JB, but from what I recall, they do not sound identical. The JB From Hell sounds a little more aggressive, with *slightly* more bottom end, but still basically like a JB. I remember the DD being hotter, and otherwise just plain different.

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

Fusion, SK site used to have some illustrations of flux patterns of various pickups.

I think the ceramic below would redirect the flux pattern, actually lessen the flux density at the top of the pickup.

Gibson's Iommy and 500T have 3 ceramics (two small mags replace the spacers). A trip to the SK site and it makes sense why Gibson did it that way.

Like mags placed N/S won't hurt anything (try it) but a ceramic next to an alnico for any length of time will change the alnico.

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

SK pickups Lightning? I'll have to check again as I don't recall seeing any info on Gibson's 500T last time I surfed around there.

well even though i never owned or tried the "real" DD i have been playing on the JB for a long time, after putting in this large ceramic it no longer sounds anything like the JB did stock.
I listened to several players on disc that use a DD in thier guitars and i have to admit the modded JB sounds like the tone they get?
older george lynch used to be a exclusive DD user, randy rhoads used one in two jacksons he played. and there is a few other DD users and that tone is very indentifiable.
I think they are the same except for the magnet and so what if they are, the custom-custom,C5 and custom are all the same pup with different magnets so it takes nothing away from duncan at all if the distortion(which came after the JB) is a JB with a large ceramic magnet, i think seymour was smart trying it in the first place

:)

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

I don't know how accurate DGB is. I question the speck on the SH2n and now the JB. Maybe my caliper doesn't read accurate in that range. I did find a supplier for #45 and #46 today.

Re: so did i turn it into a distortion?

Fusion, Turn the Firebird Pickup 90 degrees, in regards to your stacked arrangement I was thinking the pattern would be like that. That's what I was thinking in the earlier post...I'd like to retract that, now I think it would be just like one thick ceramic. I know the 500T wasn't listed at SK but don't you think that if the mags are all in NS,NS,NS that that would be just like having one deep magnet which would provide long flux lines that cover the tops of both coils? I was looking at SD's supplier list a while back, I can't remember which supplier it was but (yea I was checking out SD's suppliers web sites) and there was this one that the only thing that I could see that SD would even buy from them was a pack of metal filings in a thin see thru container.

Gear Jones, Me and Neal nobody. Just a loud local band. That’s the guitars I pick from for gigs (Neal's guitars aren’t in the picture), not to exceed 4. I said Me and Neal because I didn't want to give the impression I was using 4 amps, 3 4x12s and a rack as tall as me by myself.
