So, how many uses 250k pots with the JB?

Well, as the topic says, I'm wondering how many here uses 250k vol pots with the SH-4 JB instead of the more usual 500k? And how does it's long time partner the SH-2 Jazz respond to the lower pot value? Too much mud?

250K's would be for the JB only; 500K's for the JazzN. A number of us prefer 250K's with JB's; very few would want any neck HB with 250K's.

I WISH I had a 250k w/ my JB. I need to order the a8.

I like screamer bridge pups (Distortion/Custom), so for me, a 250k pot just takes the edge off. It still screams, it's just not harsh.

Re: So, how many uses 250k pots with the JB?

I've only briefly tried 300k pots with my Jazz and JB and thought it was nice maybe a tad mellower and a nice thickness to the JB but I like having that edge on those pickups, I prefer the 500k for both in my Les Paul. Actually the pots I have are the Super pots from RS Guitar works which measure around 550k those pups just sound great in this guitar.

Ok. I'm thinking of putting those pickups (JB & Jazz) in a Westone Concord H-III (alder body, maple neck, rosewood board, 25.5" scale). This guitar has a kinda´dense sound to it that sustains well. I'm a little concerned that the JB will be a little to harsh and ,at the same time, somewhat loose in the bass. I find that the attack in this guitar is a little slow and maybe it would be wiser to use a more tight sounding bridge humbucker to counteract that trait?

I think you'd be better off with one of the Custom family. They're more versatile in various woods, and with various magnets. In warm woods, JB's can get an 'ice pick spike' and a flabby low end. Doesn't happen all the time, but often enough.

Warm woods… like alder and maple?

Re: So, how many uses 250k pots with the JB?

I tried the Jb in ash, alder and polar, everywhere I put it I felt the 250K was the best choice, it seems to 'level' in a good way the response of that pickup.

edit. one thing I'm quite sure of about the Jb is it works better a little far from the strings compared to other pickups, when it's close the ice pick edge blueman335 talks about happens more often

Well, I have now mounted a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck and, so far, they both sound really nice with the stock 500k pots. The treble from the JB seems just right - so I guess that in this guitar the 500k volumepot works just fine.
What a great combo, by the way! Very well balanced volume-/and tonewise when going through the different positions. I also exchanged the tonepot with a push/pull so that I can split both pickups but, as many has said before, the sound isn't all that convincing. Not completely useless but it doesn't evoke my creativity.

I've tried both...500k sounds great, 250 sounds really great.

IMO people kinda overplay how dramatic pot value is, there are many on this forum that will only use certain pickups with a certain combo of pots, but the fact if the matter is pot value does not have a big enough affect on tone to be a deal breaker/maker. Differences will be subtle and the difference will be more in feel and harmonics than actual EQ.

IMHO of course...

There's other factors too, like whether the person adjusts their bridge tone knob or not. Some guys say they like 500K's, but then dial the tone pot down to '5', so they're really not getting the full brunt of the high end. If you're using a lot of distortion and effects, you probably want a brighter, sharper PU tone to cut thru that. If you're playing cleaner, you may be more sensitive to treble.

Not surprising seeing it's Seymour's favorite setup.
